ANSC 1676/SAAS 276 Name: Amanda MonacoDiscussion Assignment #2 – Due 2/9/17Challenges of Maintenance1. ObesityWhat factors influence body weight gain in pets?- Calories, exerciseWhat are the repercussions of obesity to the animal?- Heart disease, reduced mobility2. Safe rate of weight lossAssume you have a 40kg dog that is 10kg overweight, according to your veterinarian. A safe rate of weight loss is 1.5% of current body weight (40kg) per week. How long will it take this dog to lose 10kg?- 16.67 weeks- .015/wk = 0.6 kg/wk- 10kg x .6kgHow many calories should this dog be fed per day? (Assume that this dog is at maintenance, feed at 60% of requirement.)- 750kcal/dayCarnivore/Omnivore Digestive anatomy – List the function AND draw a diagram including the 5 Parts below.1. Mouth:a. Chews2. Stomach:a. Digests, breaks down into smaller pieces3. Small Intestine:a. Absorption of nutrients, more digestion4. Cecum:a. Fermentation, absorbs water5. Large intestine:a. More fermentation, absorbs waterMeat only diets – dog/catRefer to the table labeled, “Meat! It’s (Not Only) What’s for Dinner!” on the slides for today. Do you think that an all meat diet provides all necessary nutrients for a 20-lb dog? Why or why not? - No, the calcium to phosphorus ratio is too much. The calcium percentage should be higher than the phosphorus percentage; in the meat diet it is reversed. There is 4 times the amount of protein that they need. The calcium and iodine levels are too low which can lead to thyroid problems.Sustainability of pet diets1. Describe sustainability with regard to pet food. What issues are important?- Sustainability has to do with a food system providing sufficient energy and essential nutrients in order to maintain good health. Nutritional sustainability of food can be influenced by ingredients, nutrients, and ability to digest. Many pet foods provide nutrients in excess and can be over-consumed by pets. This can lead to food wastage and obesity. However, pet products often use secondary products from the human food chain which is a great from a sustainability standpoint because these secondary products would otherwise not be used.2. Find and summarize an interesting news article that discusses sustainability and pet food.- What’s the environmental impact of pet food? https://www.worldwildlife.org/magazine/issues/spring-2016/articles/what-s-the-environmental-impact-of-pet-food- Pet food is often made with “human-grade” ingredients. These ingredients can carry a high price for the environment and they may not even be what the pet needs. In 2014, Americans spent $22 billion on pet food! Pet food made with byproducts are more sustainable than those made with human-grade ingredients. They use animal parts that would otherwise be dumped in landfills. Human-grade pet food won’t necessarily give the pet the nourishment that it needs. What matters most is not the grade of ingredients but rather the balance of nutrients it contains.Raw pet foodWhat factors are important when considering feeding a raw diet to a dog or cat? What is your opinion, would you feed your dog or cat a raw diet? Why or why not?- Higher chance of bacteria in raw food which can transfer to the ownerso Salmonella, listeria- I would not feed my pet raw food, it seems as though there are plenty of nutrients in normal pet food. The risk of bacteria transfer from the pet food to human is a risk I would not want to take. However, if my pet had allergies and needed a raw diet then I would
