social problems Reading Assignments Text Students will be required to take short on line quizzes on each chapter using REVEL Your reading assignments are related quiz due dates are as follows Chapter will not follow the text outline Lectures will not cover many of the topics covered in your text When discussing some topics which are covered in your text lectures will typically go into much greater Drugs and Drug Prohibition Lecture will be supplemented by reading packets posted on Blackboard This reading material may be covered on exams An Extended Reading Packet Covering Recreational Drugs and Drug Prohibition Will Be Covered on the Final Exam Exams Evaluations of a student s understanding of lecture material and related reading materials posted on Blackboard will be through exams All exams are open note exams In some rare cases exams may be given as take home exams Unless you are told otherwise exams will be given in class during normal class times Questions will typically be true false or multiple choice Exams will be fairly lengthy Many students may feel time constrained If you have university recognized learning or reading disabilities please let us know and we ll make alternate testing arrangements as needed Date Test Material Covered 3 11 15 Exam 1 Introduction to social problems social inequality race and ethnicity Gender crime and deviance 4 15 15 Exam 2 To Be Announced Exam 3 Drugs and drug prohibition The third exam may include an additional lecture topic if time permits Attendance Attendance is NOT mandatory in this class If you do not wish to attend this class feel free to stay at home However we will be taking attendance randomly and attending will be worth extra credit Each regular attendance check will be worth 1 point of extra credit although there is a possibility that some special attendance checks will be worth more than 1 point The total extra credit for attendance this semester will be 30 points or more If you are absent for a class in which we have an attendance check there is no chance to make up the attendance points under any circumstance Thus do not worry about trying to document illness or get excuse notes IF YOU HAVE FLU LIKE SYMPTOMS DO NOT COME TO CLASS We will be using SCANTRONS to take your attendance so you must be able to bubble in your student ID So please BRING YOUR ID TO CLASS with you or write down your ID number somewhere easily accessible We CANNOT look them up for you and the data processing center will not fill them in for you Classroom Behavior Students are expected to refrain from any and ALL disruptive and or offensive behavior Students may be penalized for such behavior according to the judgment of the instructor Grading 3 exams x 200 points each 600 points REVEL Reading Quizzes 200 points Total Base Points 800 points More than 800 points A 720 800 A 640 719 B 560 639 C 480 5559 D 479 and below F Extra Credit Attendance 30 points Exam questions 30 points Total possible extra credit 60 points The instructor may choose to award bonus points for attendance on a few special days Also exams will typically have more than the 200 possible points but still be graded on a 200 point base There will be no extra credit available on an individual basis If you have questions or problems Feel free to discuss problems or questions with the instructor during his office hours or by appointment Likewise our TAs will be available by appointment You are strongly encouraged to check with our TAs first on all matters involving test scores test dates attendance information and other clerical issues as they will be best suited to answer such questions or deal with related problems quickly and effectively Also listed carefully to classroom announcements and check out internet site blackboard
