INF 322 1st EditionLecture 3Who was John Newbery and what books did he publish?- Newbery was a publisher and referred to as the “father of children’s literature” - He was the first publisher to see the potential of delight and amusement in children’s books - He was also the first publisher to see children as consumers- Published books such as “Little Pretty Pocket Book” and “The Renowned History of Little Goody Two Shoes”Know the Following Titles:o Curious George- George is a monkey in Africa. One day, he sees a man in the yellow hat and decides to take George home with him. He uses his hat as bait. George puts on the hat, but he is caught. George was sad, but still curious. On the ship, the man tells George he is going toa zoo. George promised to be good. On the deck, he sees seagulls flying, so he decides to try, but lands in the water. When the trip is over, they go to the man’s house. George is tired and goes to sleep. The next morning, the man phones the zoo. He wants to try the phone too, but he accidentally calls the fire station. They come and see George, and catch the naughty monkey and take him to prison. Then, the watchman comes in to see him, but George escapes through the door. He sees a balloon man and wants a red balloon, but he grabs all of the balloons and goes flying. He lands on top of a traffic light and sees the man in the yellow hat. The man takes him and goes the zoo where he lives. o Horton Hatches an Egg- Mayzie is hatching an egg, but she’s bored. She sees Horton, and asks Horton to sit on the egg. Horton sees a problem with that, but Mayzie begs him for a break. Horton agrees. He decides to prop the tree so it can support his own weight. So Horton sits on the egg. He even sits during a terrible storm through the night. Meanwhile, Mayzie is on a beach, deciding she will never go back. Horton sits there, through autumn and winter. Horton won’t break his word. When spring comes, his friends laugh at Horton up in a tree. Horton is lonely, but he won’t break his word. Soon, three hunters came up sneaking behind him. There were rifles pointing at him, but Horton refused to run away. The men didn’t shoot because they were surprised at seeing an elephant in a tree. They decide to capture him and sell him to the circus. So they catch him, still on the tree. Theygo up a hill, onto a ship, and over the ocean, but Horton refuses to break his word. The men sold him, and he is laughed at the circus, but he refuses to break his word. One day,the circus is near where Mayzie is resting, so she decides to go for fun. She sees Horton, but then all of a sudden, the egg starts to hatch. Mayzie wants the egg now, (the work was done now) so Horton sadly backs down. But the egg hatches into an elephant andbird hybrid. The people are so happy, so they set him free. Throughout this book, only green, red, and white colors are present.o Madeline’s Rescue- The smallest girl in a house in Paris with twelve little girls is Madeleine. One day, she slipped and fell over a bridge, frightening the nun (Miss Clavel). They fear she is dead, but a dog drags her to safety. She is brought back, given chamomile tea, and Miss Clavel turns off the light. There is then an argument about where the dog will sleep. The dog is named Genevieve and is clever, enjoying the daily walks. Six months passed by, and the first of May comes along because the inspection happens that day. The board of trusteessays the dog isn’t allowed. The president of the board of trustees sends the dog away. Madeline says Genevieve will have her vengeance. They go out searching for Genevieve. They are heartbroken, and come back. That night, Miss Clavel goes outside and realizes that Genevieve is outside. The girls argue over where Genevieve will sleep. Miss Clavel isannoyed and says if the keep arguing, then Genevieve will have to leave. The third night, they realize that Genevieve has had puppies. Now each girl gets one. o Harold and the Purple Crayon- Harold (a baby), decides to walk in the moonlight, so he draws the moon and a path. He then leaves the path. He draws a forest, but doesn’t want to get lost, so he only draws one tree. (an apple tree) He puts a dragon underneath to guard it. He’s so frightened that his hand shakes, accidentally drawing water. He draws a sailboat. He lands on a beach and draws a picnic with nine pies. There were leftovers, so he draws a moose and porcupine to eat them. He draws a mountain to try and see where his bedroom is. He slips at the top, but draws a hot air balloon. He still can’t see his bedroom. He draws a house, but it isn’t his. He makes more buildings with windows, but they aren’t his. He draws a policeman, who’s not much help. He realizes his room was around the moon, so he draws his bedroom and goes to sleep.o Tale of Peter Rabbit- There were once four Rabbits named Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail, and Peter who live with their mother under a tree. She tells them they can go in the fields or lane, but not go to into Mr. McGregor’s garden. Their father was put into a pie because he had gone into the garden. Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail were good bunnies, so they gathered blackberries, but naughty Peter goes into the garden. He eats lettuces, French beans, and radishes. He feels sick, so he looks for parsley, but he meets Mr. McGregor. He goes after Peter and Peter loses his shoes. He runs into a gooseberry net and was caught by his jacket. Peter feels hopeless, but some sparrows overhear and implores him to exert himself. Peter wriggles himself out of the jacket and escapes in time. He hides in a watering can, but sneezes, and runs away. Mr. McGregor is tired now and goes back to work. He tries to go home, but can’t squeeze under the door because he’s too fat now. He sees a cat but decides to go away without speaking. Mr. McGregor was working, and behind him was the gate. Peter ran all the way back home. Peter was not feeling well, so he was given chamomile tea. But the others had blackberries and milk.o Swamp Angel- Angelica Longrider is born, but she is very tall. Her father gave her an ax to play with, and she grows skilled at it, building a log cabin at 2, and performing many wonders. One day, a wagon train got stuck in a swamp and she comes to help them. They call her an angel. There was a bear named Thunder Tarnation that stole food. Swamp Angel signs up to find the bear, ignoring the …
