(available by email)Course Description: This course provides a systematic study of building medical terms and understandingtheir relationship to human anatomy and physiology, pathology, disease, diagnostic procedures, and medicaltreatments. (One credit; no pre-requisites; permit)Course Objectives: By the end of this course, the student will be able to1. Identify, use, and spell word elements and abbreviations correctly.2. Apply rules for proper pronunciation of medical terms.3. List and explain medical terms related to the following body systems:a. Body Structureb. Integumentaryc. Respiratoryd. Cardiovasculare. Blood and Lymphaticf. Digestiveg. Urinaryh. Endocrine i. Nervousj. Reproductive (female and male)k. Musculoskeletall. Eyes and Ears14. Describe common anatomical, pathological, physiological, diagnostic, and therapeutic terms.Black Board Website: Students are expected to have an NDSU email address and use the Blackboard system(http://www.ndsu.edu, “Online Services” and then “Blackboard”) for this course. Announcements, courseinformation, weekly quizzes, and grades will be posted to this site. Please notify the instructor if help isneeded to navigate in Blackboard.Required Text: Gylys, B.A., & Masters, R.M. (2014). Medical Terminology Simplified: A programmed learningapproach by body system. (5th ed.). Philadelphia: F.A. Davis. ISBN: 9780803623026, ~$64.95. This courserequires that the student study independently using this text as the primary learning tool.Class Components: This blended class has four components: 1.) Text and accompanying online learningactivities, 2.) Weekly Blackboard quizzes, 3.) Class Examinations, and 4.) Pre-examination Review Meetings.1. Text and accompanying online learning activities. The text and accompanying online learningactivities provide a programmed approach to learning medical terminology. Each textbook chapter isaccompanied by a learning module and activities found in the Medical Language Lab. Entry into theMedical Language Lab is TITLE: Medical Terminology for Health Professions. The class ID:784ABACDAC.Students are encouraged to listen to the audio in addition to practicing and strengthening correct medicalterm pronunciations. Each textbook chapter is accompanied by six different activities. These areaccessed by going to EDIT CLASS, going to (4) LESSON SETTINGS, go to SELECT LESSON, going toPRACTICE, and selecting an activity. I would highly recommend that students complete all the learningactivities available to get the most out of their study and practice. The activities are: - Build Medical Words- Crossword- Don’t Tip the Scale- Flashcards- Labeling- Word SearchOptional: Extra Credit Completing BUILD MEDICAL WORDS activity each week will give you two(2) points of extra credit for a total of 28 extra points. The Activity results must be received by me by6 p.m. on Wednesdays. You will submit your completed activity on site in grade book. 2. Weekly Blackboard quizzes are to be completed by 6 p.m. each Wednesday. See attached coursecalendar for topics covered on each quiz. Though students may use their textbooks to confirmanswers before submitting these quizzes, students are encouraged to challenge themselves to takethese quizzes from memory to better prepare for in-class quizzes and the final exam which do notpermit the use of course materials. Bb quizzes will not be timed. Only one attempt will be permitted.No points will be awarded for late quizzes. Please be sure to connect to a reliable high speed internetsource and clear your browser cache/cookies for each browser and on each computer you use, beforeyou start your Blackboard quiz or test (see http://www.ndsu.edu/its/instructional_services/cachefor further information). Please watch the Blackboard home page for other importantannouncements related to its use to avoid technical difficulties.3. Class Examinations will be held on Wednesdays, February 11, March 11, April 15, (exams), and May06 (final exam) in Sudro Hall 21, from 3:30 – 5 p.m. There are no makeup assignments for missedclass sessions unless arrangements have been made with the instructor in advance of the absence.4. Pre-examination Review Meetings will be held at 3:30 p.m. in Sudro Hall, Room 21 on February 04,March 04, April 08, and April 295. There will be an initial class meeting on January 14, 2015, in Sudro 21 to introduce the class andexpectations. In summary, on a weekly basis, read the textbook chapters and take the quiz in Blackboard. Study for in-classexams and the final exam.Grading: Final grades will consist of points awarded as follows:Blackboard quizzes weekly (5 pts./week) 70 pts.Major Exams (100pts each) 300 pts.Final Exam 170 pts.Total 540 pts.Extra Credit activities (2 pts per week x 14 weeks) 28 ptsLetter grades will be awarded according to the following grading scale:90% - 100% = A; 80% - 89% = B; 70-79% = C; 60%-69% = D; Less than 60% = FAcademic Responsibility: The academic community is operated on the basis of honesty, integrity, and fair play. NDSU Policy 335; code of Academic Responsibility and Conduct: http://www.ndsu.edu/fileadmin/policy/335.pdf applies to cases in which cheating, plagiarism, or other academic misconduct has occurred in an instructional context.
