PHY 107 1st Edition Lecture 4 Outline of Last Lecture I. Multiplying vectors- Dot product- Cross productOutline of Current Lecture II. Unit vector multiplicationIII. Motion along a straight lineCurrent LectureUnit Vector Multiplication:- Any unit vector crossed with itself gives a 0 vector´i x ´i = ´j x ´j = ´k x ´k = 0 - Two different unit vectors cross multiplied give the third unit vector (order matters)´i x ´j = ´k´j x ´k = ´i´k x ´i = ´j´j x ´i = -´k´k x ´j = -´i´i x ´k = -´jMotion Along a Straight Line:- Displacement – an objects change in position if it moves from position x1 to position x2 ∆x = x2 – x1  Vector quantity – has both magnitude and direction Only depends on initial and final position Ex. An object moves from x = 5 m to x = 200 m then back to x = 5 m. The total distance covered is 2 x 195 = 390 m but the displacement is 5 – 5 = 0 m. - Average velocity – units are m/s Graph: plot position (x(t)) as a function of time t for a moving object  Defined as vavg = x2−x1t2−t1 = ∆ x∆ t- Average speed – total distance traveled in a time intervalThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute. Defined as savg = total distance∆
