InternetInternetLecture 1Internet – A network of networks connected around the world. Began as a military experiment of long-range networking. It is interactive, immediate, and global.WWW – World Wide Web – A subset of the Internet consisting of hypertext and/or hypermedia documents.Hypertext – a document that contains a hyperlink (link) to another document (text files) within the realms of the internetHypermedia – a similar idea, except it may contain links to Graphic, sound, video files as well as document filesHypertext and hypermedia documents allow you to move freely from one file/document to another across the WWW. Computers that store these hypertext/hypermedia documents and make them available to other computers is a WEB SERVER. Anyone, any computer, that requests access to this document is a CLIENT.HTTP - Hypertext Transfer Protocol – The set of standards (protocols) that govern the way data is transmitted across the web. This allows every client to be able to display every document available on every server. Web Browser – The specific software programs that allow access to HTTP documents. It enables a user to “browse” the Web. Examples: Internet Explorer, Netscape NavigatorConnecting to the Internet – Requires LAN setup or dial up to anInternet Service Provider (ISP – discussed earlier)The location of the document (address) on the WWW is known as the URL – Uniform Resource Locator, or Web address.
