THAR 281 1st Edition Lecture 1 Outline of Current Lecture I Imitation II Ceremony vs Ritual III Popular Entertainment IV Theater The Basics V Stage Types and Their Components VI Technical Theater aka Stage Craft Current Lecture I Imitation a Imitation is a human instinct that is universal b 3 reasons we imitate others i Instruction when watch others we learn from them ii Entertainment iii Connection show you re part of group society II Ceremony vs Ritual a Ceremony is a formal religious or social performance b Ritual is acting out of a specific established procedure III Popular Entertainment a This includes movies concerts Blue Man Group etc IV Theater The Basics a Theater is a collaborative form of fine arts that uses live performers to present the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience in a specific place b In order for something to be theater it i Has to be live ii Needs to have a live audience iii Happens at a specific place iv Is collaborative v Presents the experience vi Is a real imagined event c Stage is where a performer does performance d The House is where the audience gathers e Backstage is where performers wait for entrances and where technicians carry out their work f Wings are where actors wait for entrances located immediately offstage g Apron is an extension of the stage located closer to the audience h Pit is a space usually between audience and stage where musicians play music V VI Stage Types and Their Components a Proscenium Stage i It is like a picture frame ii The audience and performer spaces are very clear iii Typically a small space between audience and stage b Thrust Stage i It is like a fashion show runway ii Stage is surrounded on all 3 sides by audience iii Audience and performers are closer iv Stage thrusts itself into the audience c Arena Stage i It is like Kyle Field ii Performers are completely surrounded by audience d Found Stage i It is like a park or like a flash mob ii It is a random place where performers put on a show Technical Theater aka Stage Craft a Scenic Design is the stuff used on stage such as backdrops b Properties Design are the props i Set Dressing is the dressing set so things come to life c Costume Design are the costumes and what designers do to create them sometimes responsible for wigs and make up d Lighting Design is how actors could disappear or not in the light e Text is what the performer performs does not HAVE to be written
