COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will provide students with little or no medical background the opportunity to develop a basic literacy level in all diagnostic medical imaging modalities. This course will provide potential Sonography (DMS) or Radiography (RAD) students with the required literacy level to better understand and function within the clinical components of a DMS or RAD educational program. This is an information course and NOT a "how to do" course, at no time will the students be instructed in the methodology or techniques utilized in the actual production of diagnostic images. This course will provide medical assisting (MOA) or nursing (NUR) students with expanded knowledge of diagnostic imaging preparations, procedures, and the sequencing of procedures and expected obtainable results. This course will provide for those students in the process of selecting an Allied Health career the insight to make a more informed career choice. PRE-REQUISITES: Suggested Pre-requisite to this course is BIO-155 Anatomy and Physiology, and MOA-120 Medical Terminology. Students who successfully complete the Introduction to Diagnostic Imaging course will be prepared to accept positions in the Vascular Technology and Ultrasound Programs. OCC 3 2. Project Success Day is Tuesday: September 20, 2011 this semester. Each semester for one day, JCC cancels classes and encourages students to attend Project Day. This is a special day of workshops and seminars with your college success in mind. You are strongly encouraged to attend. ASSIGNMENT: Review for Midterm SESSION 6- LECTURE: Computed Tomography (CT or CAT) SESSION 7- MMIIDDTTEERRMM EEXXAAMMIINNAATTIIOONN SESSION 8- LECTURE: Mammography SESSION 9- LECTURE: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) SESSION 10- LECTURE: Interventional Radiography/ Special Procedures SESSION 11- *Test 2* LECTURE: Nuclear Medicine SESSION 12- LECTURE: Radiation Therapy SESSION 13- Movie (Radiation Therapy) SESSION 14- Final Review SESSION 15- FINAL EXAM – Covers ALL MaterialGRADING SYSTEM ALL TESTS AND EXAMS WILL BE ACCUMULATIVE TESTS: There will be two tests administered. MIDTERM EXAMINATION: Students will be expected to identify specific imaging studies and topics discussed in classes 1-6. QUIZES: At the beginning of each class there will be a 5pt quiz given each week unless otherwise told. Quizzes will cover the lecture from the week before and they will be all fill in the blank. There will also be quizzes given bi-weekly on the Chapter Readings that will be assigned or homework will be given. FINAL EXAM: Students will be expected to identify and differentiate between a variety of diagnostic medical modalities and images. Students will be questioned on topics discussed in classes 1-15. (100 pts.) GRADING/POINT SCALE 95%-100% - 4.0 90%-94% - 3.5 85%-89% - 3.0 80%-84.5% - 2.5 75%-79% - 2.0 . A 2.0 or "C" is a passing grade. Only courses with passing grades count toward graduation. Other colleges transfer in only courses with passing grades. Many financial aid sources, including most employers, require passing grades. Additionally, earning less than a 2.0 in a class results in not being able to participate in the next level of courses in a discipline which requires this course as a pre-requisite. If you attempt to register for the next course sequence and have not passed the pre-requisite course, you will be dropped from that class. Instructor's Responsibilities: to facilitate learning, provide and explain the necessary materials for each student to understand the assignments and develop course performance objectives to a near mastery level. Classes will begin on time weather permitting. LECTURE: The curricula of this course serves two objectives; to provide a basic literacy about diagnostic imaging procedures, and two, to deliver information that may lead the student to an informed choice regarding a career. This format may also lead to unpredictable and tangible topics which may not directly relate to the
