If for any reason we need to meet outside of class time, it will be at times either before or after my classes, by appointment. This semester I am on campus Monday mornings, Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday night at Western High School. Required Text: Professionalism in Health Care; A Primer for Career Success by Sherry Makely, Ph.D., RT-R, Prentice Hall; 3rd edition (2008) ISBN-10: 0135153875, ISBN-13: 978-0135153871 Textbooks can be ordered online via the JCC bookstore at: www.jackson.bkstr.com COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a 3 credit course that will provide students, with little or no medical background, the opportunity to develop a basic literacy level in all diagnostic medical imaging modalities. This is an information course and NOT a "how to do" course, at no time will the students be instructed in the methodology or techniques utilized in the actual production of diagnostic images. This course will provide potential sonography (DMS) or radiography (RAD) students with the required literacy level to better understand and function within the clinical components of a DMS or RAD educational program. This course will provide medical assisting (MOA) or nursing (NUR) students with expanded knowledge of diagnostic imaging preparations, procedures, and the sequencing of procedures and expected obtainable results. This course will provide for those students in the process of selecting an Allied Health career the insight to make a more informed career choice. JCC Associate Degree Outcomes (ADO's): The course goals and objectives incorporate specific Associate Degree Outcomes (ADOs) established by the JCC Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty. These goals are in concert with four-year colleges, universities, and reflect input from the professional communities we serve. ADOs guarantee students achieve goals necessary for graduation credit, transferability, and professional skills needed in many certification programs. The ADOs and course objectives addressed in this class include the following: ADO 7 at the developing level demonstrating an interest in learning ADO 7 at the developing level incorporating new knowledge with old Course Objectives: Students who successfully complete the Introduction to Diagnostic Imaging course will be able to identify and differentiate between diagnostic imaging modalities. They will demonstrate an interest in learning about a career in diagnostic imaging, and the professionalism needed in health care.Holmes 2 Center for Student Success: Tutors (plus additional services for academic success) can be accessed by calling 796-8415 or by stopping by the Center for Student Success, Bert Walker Hall. Students requiring special assistance (including those affected by the Americans with Disabilities Act) should contact the Center for Student Success. This is the first step in acquiring the appropriate accommodations to facilitate your learning. GRADING SYSTEM All assessments are accumulative. Weekly quizzes will cover the weekly material and will be taken in class. YOUR READING OF THE MATERIAL IS TO BE DONE BEFORE CLASS. Class time will be to discuss and build on what you have already read so your understanding is sufficient to take that week’s quiz at the end of the class. QUIZZES: There will be 16 quizzes (one for each topic and Professionalism reading). Each quiz is worth 5pts (16@5=80pts.) TESTS: There will be two tests (Test #1 and Test #2). Each test is worth 20 points, will have a 20 minute time limit, and will cover everything up to the time of exam. 20 questions each. (2@20=40 pts.) MIDTERM EXAMINATION: Students will be expected to identify specific imaging studies and topics presented in classes up to date. The midterm is between Test one and Test two. 50 questions, 50 minute time limit. (50 pts.) FINAL EXAM: Students will be expected to identify and differentiate between a variety of diagnostic medical modalities and images. Students will be questioned on topics discussed in all segments of the class. 50 questions, 50 minute time limit. (100 pts.) Course total points: 270 GRADING/POINT SCALE 95%-100% = 4.0 90%-94% = 3.5 85%-89% = 3.0 80%-84% = 2.5 75%-79% = 2.0 A 2.0 or "C" is a passing grade. Only courses with passing grades count toward graduation. Other colleges transfer in only courses with passing grades. Many financial aid sources, including most employers, require passing grades. Additionally, earning less than a 2.0 in a class results in not being able to participate in the next level of courses in a discipline which requires this course as a pre-requisite. If you attempt to register for the next course sequence and have not passed the pre-requisite course, you will be dropped from that class. Some revisions may be necessary during the course due to school policies, textbook issues, test issues, etc. Any change will be posted as a course announcement and announced in class.
