PREREQUISITES a mathematical background equivalent to two years of high school algebra DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES Statistics has important applications in many fields including genetics physics manufacturing asset pricing and FDA drug approval In this course you will learn basic statistical tools and apply them to gain insight into real world phenomena We will cover topics including data organization measures of central tendency and spread linear regression basic probability confidence intervals and hypothesis tests for means and proportions COURSE MATERIALS Required TI 83 or TI 84 calculator Required Statistics The Art and Science of Learning from Data 2nd Ed by Agresti and Franklin printed copy an electronic copy comes with MyMathLab CourseCompass Required for E sections MyMathLab CourseCompass Math 1530 03E class code cochener18311 Note Students in non E sections are welcome to use these codes as well Instructions for enrolling in a CourseCompass class are on the announcements page of my website No work done in CourseCompass will be used for grading purposes in this course Required for E sections Supplemental algebra text sold in campus bookstore packaged with the text HOMEWORK Homework problems will be assigned for each chapter and collected and checked for EFFORT Each student will receive 0 1 3 or 5 points based upon the homework attempts If there has been a good attempt at each problem the grade will be a 5 if more than 50 have been attempted the grade will be a 3 and if some problems have been attempted but less than 50 the grade will be a 1 If none have been done the grade will be 0 The list of assigned problems is available on my web page MINITAB ASSIGNMENTS Several assignments involving Minitab statistical software will be collected and graded These assignments together with your chapter homework problems will be worth 20 of your final grade see below The specific assignments along with their due dates is posted on the Minitab Assignments page of my web site for Math 1530 Your Minitab assignment including printed material and your portable media usb drive etc should be placed in an 8 x 11 manila envelope with your name on the outside and placed on the front desk at the beginning of class on the due date GRADES Your grade in this class will be based on your performance on homework Minitab activities and exams the proportions of which will determine your final grade as follows Homework and Minitab assignments HW Exam I E1 Chapters 1 2 3 Exam II E2 Chapters 4 5 6 7 Exam III E3 Chapters 8 9 Final Exam FE Chapters 1 9 20 20 20 20 20 That is your final grade FG will be determined by FG 20 HW E1 E2 E3 FE No late homework or exams will be accepted regardless of reason To compensate I will drop your two lowest homework grades I will also replace your lowest regular exam score with your final exam score provided it helps your grade You may arrange to take exams early if you anticipate being absent The final letter grade you receive will be based on your final average according to 90 100 80 90 70 80 60 70 60 A B C D F A mid term grade will be awarded for all students in this course The grade awarded may not necessarily be based on 50 of the course requirements and may or may not differ from the final grade Your mid term grade will be posted on AP Web Students enrolled in an E section of a mathematics course have the opportunity to accomplish two goals 1 complete the general education core mathematics requirements 2 satisfy the TBR requirements to address mathematics deficiencies Removal of the mathematics deficiency is dependent upon performance in the course attendance and participation in the SLA workshops and performance on the SLA workshop post test If enrolled in an e section you are required to participate in the SLA workshop The time and location of this SLA workshop appear on your schedule in APSU Self Serve The SLA leader will explain the requirements associated with the SLA workshop during the first workshop meeting ATTENDANCE Attendance is a key ingredient for success in any course and will be expected in this one You will be held accountable for what takes place in class whether you are present or not Failure to attend any of the first five classes will result in a grade of FN Failure to attend any other consecutive sequence of five classes will result in a with a W F FN or FA you will receive a W If you withdraw after that date you will receive an F unless there are unusually extenuating circumstances such as hospitalization etc POLICY ON MINORS According to APSU policy 3 032 minors any non student under the age of 18 accompanying staff faculty students or visitors on campus are not permitted in the classroom While I recognize that extenuating circumstances occur and make it difficult for some students to attend without bringing children with them on occasion I must enforce University policy and thus will deny any request for a child in my classroom You should also be aware that minors are not allowed in academic labs computer labs science labs or the library Further children cannot be left in halls outside classrooms Please be aware that the policy on unattended minors is for the purpose of ensuring that our classrooms are conducive to learning and for the safety and protection of minors For additional information on
