Minitab Assignment One Since you have your own copy of Minitab 14 Student Edition you may use it to do the Minitab assignments However Minitab 15 the current full version is available in some of the computer labs on campus In particular it is available on the computers in Claxton 303 those in Claxton 300 and those in the extended hours lab in the library When doing your assignments be sure to save your data files on your portable media and not on the hard drive of the lab computer Note You may use any portable media 3 5 in diskette CD DVD memory stick to save to You will be graded on those files as well as the printouts you hand in with your assignments If you use a diskette for storage I would like for you to use a new diskette for this course or one that has been recently formatted and just store the files for this course on that diskette This is primarily to eliminate the possibility of spreading computer viruses To start Minitab 15 double click on the desktop icon When Minitab 15 opens there will be a tool bar across the top a window called the session window and a window called the data window The session window displays the results of all commands that you have Minitab execute as well as any text which you choose to type in The data window is where you enter in a worksheet the data which Minitab will use As you will see in later assignments you can have several data windows open at the same time In the student version the worksheet has a 10 000 cell maximum and at most 5 worksheets can be open at one time Cells may contain numbers or text but unlike a spreadsheet they may never contain formulas As with any Windows application only one window can be active at a time To make a window active simply click anywhere within its boundary The blue border at the top will then become dark blue Once a window is active you can work in it print it or save it The session window and data window can each be saved separately using the File Y Save Current Worksheet as or File Y Save Session Window as commands As you progress through a single session with Minitab you will create worksheets graphs and do various kinds of statistical analyses The collection of all worksheets graphs and session output is known as a project Using the floppy disk icon on the toolbar is the same as using File YSave Project as which saves all graphs and worksheets as well as the session window There is another window which is minimized when Minitab starts so you don t see it the Project Manager window This allows you to navigate through various windows and files in your Minitab project and also preserves a complete record of your work in a given session Before you save your project use Project Manager to check that all graphs worksheets etc are in the project To keep worksheets or graphs in a project simply minimize them when you are not using them If you accidentally close one using the red X you can simply reopen it and restore it to the project by using File Y Open Worksheet or File Y Open Graph After doing this assignment you will need to save all that you have done in a project on your portable media You will be given instructions for saving the project at the end of the assignment step 7 If you have to exit before completing the entire project save the project as in step 7 Then when you resume your work open the project using File Open Project and you can start off where you ended the previous time Special Note If you have begun your project in Minitab 15 and wish to save your work and finish using Minitab 14 Student Edition you must make sure to save your work in Minitab 14 format since earlier versions will not read files created with later versions See step 7 for details 1 Begin by typing your name in the session window 2 Then enter the data given below in the worksheet These data represent flight times for two different designs of paper airplane One design used a paper clip the other merely used folding Flight Trial times in seconds Design 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Clip 3 3 3 4 3 5 3 6 3 4 3 6 3 5 3 3 Fold 3 6 4 4 4 9 4 5 4 5 4 5 4 1 4 6 Here there are two variables the design of the paper airplane and its flight time There are a total of 16 observations 8 for each design The first row in a worksheet above the row numbered 1 is reserved for variable names For now we will leave them as C1 etc Make the worksheet active and move the cursor to the cell directly below C1 type Clip and press enter You can type Clip in each of the first 8 rows corresponding to 8 flights or you can position the cursor over the small black square in the lower right corner of the cell until the symbol changes to a black cross Click and drag downward until you highlight the cells in rows 1 through 8 the release the mouse button This is the copy handle and copies the word Clip into each of the highlighted cells Note that the C1 at the top of the column has changed to C1 T indicating that this column refers to a text variable Repeat this process in rows 9 through 16 for Fold Now type in the times for each design Finally go back and click on box below C1 T and type Design as the column label For C2 type Duration as the label 3 Then save your worksheet on your portable media as Flight Times To do that make sure that the worksheet window is the active window and use the menu option File Save Current Worksheet As Then Minitab will open a window which will allow you to save the worksheet Be sure to save the file on your portable media by clicking on the down arrow to the right of the Save in box near the top of the window and then choosing the appropriate option Enter Flight Times for the name of the file and click on Save It should then save the worksheet on your media Note You may use any portable media 3 5 in diskette CD DVD memory stick to save to 4 It is always good practice to graph a set of data to look for obvious errors in data entry notice striking patterns and to familiarize yourself with the dataset prior to other statistical procedures For one with numeric data like flight times one simple graph is the dotplot Click on Graph in the menu bar and choose Dotplot In the first dialog box highlight Simple for One Y and click ok Highlight C2 in the …
