Angel cms psu edu My lecture notes have been revised from Dr Scott Showalter s and Dr Mary Jo Bojan s CH110 FA10 SAS 1 Necessary materials 1 Textbook Brown LeMay Bursten Murphy Chemistry The Central Science 11th ed 2009 Required Note Half Text Volume 1 is an option Do not purchase Volume 1 if you will take Chem 112 2 Fall Chem 110 Student Packet Required 3 Wilson Solutions to Exercises in Chemistry The Central Science 11th ed Highly Recommended 4 Non text programmable calculator Required CH110 FA10 SAS 2 What is Chemistry 110 1 From the Course Packet Chemistry 110 is the first in a two course sequence in general chemistry Chemistry impacts every area in our lives from how our bodies work to the environment to new materials to how we live and work Our goals for this course are for you to recognize that what happens at the molecular level profoundly affects our macroscopic world and how fun chemistry is By the end of Chem 110 you will understand conceptually 1 how atoms combind to form molecules 2 how molecules interact and react with each other and 3 how the molecular level structure affects the macroscopic properties 2 From ME Chemistry 110 expands on what you already know from previous chemistry courses teaches you some new concepts introduces you to scientific reasoning and applies these ideas to important topics regardless of what your major is It is the key concepts and ideas the big picture that we hope you take from this course e g what you will remember a year from now They will be foundational for almost any career you choose CH110 FA10 SAS 3 Should you be here No previous chemistry experience Chem 101 is a better option Chem 110 is NOT appropriate for you Prerequisites for Chem 110 see general course info on website Algebra High school chemistry Chapters 1 2 in text Familiarity with Chapters 3 4 10 NOTE Chem 110 assumes previous exposure to Chemistry we move very quickly Chem 108 is 1 credit add on course to Chem 110 for students needing more help you can add now during the drop add period CH110 FA10 SAS 4 Who am I Name Dr Alan Benesi Degrees Cruz BS University of California at Santa Ph D University of California at Berkeley Hometown Berkeley CA Job Director of the NMR Facility and Senior Lecturer in Chemistry Research All aspects of NMR spectroscopy Dynamics of water at interfaces and in solids CH110 FA10 SAS 5 Who are your TAs If you have been assigned to a section associated with the 4 40 pm lecture Johnson Robert rjj159 psu edu 79 80 86 Bittner Danielle drb5076 psu edu 81 82 88 Nagle Brittney bnn1 psu edu 83 87 89 Kafle Kubindra kuk188 psu edu 85 90 91 Carrie Ryan car319 psu edu 84 You are very fortunate to have an excellent group of TAs Utilize their knowledge to get the most out of this course Don t let the online homework and quizzes fool you into thinking you don t need them CH110 FA10 SAS 6 My expectations 1 You will take personal responsibility and pride in everything you do for this course The TAs and I do not give you points YOU EARN THEM We are here to help 2 You will take ownership of this course know the requirements know and adhere to deadlines follow procedures and deadlines The course website ANGEL and course packet are excellent resources utilize them to keep current on course announcements and to find supplemental materials 3 Be responsible for doing what you need to do to learn and master the material in advance of exams different for different people and utilize the numerous available resources Set up cooperative study groups and do your homework together There is no curve so you cannot hurt yourself by working with others which is a stupid mentality anyway CH110 FA10 SAS 7 My expectations continued 4 Do not wait until the last minute That is a sure way to fail or at the very least fall very far behind and add un needed stress 5 Treat everyone with respect at all times everyone is here to learn do the best that they can and get the most out of their college experience even if you don t think so now you will in 10 years Which brings us to Cell Phones Turn Them Off When you get to class And lastly CH110 FA10 SAS 8 DON T CHEAT Cheating is disrespectful of everybody in this room most importantly yourself and is not worth the consequences We me the TAs the proctors are tech savvy students and former students who know about all ways to cheat using old tricks and new technology and we regularly look for such breaches of ethical behavior Don t think naively that you can cheat on a test without getting caught It s a risk that s not worth taking While it is not as easy for us to catch you cheating on your online homework and quizzes remember that they are designed to prepare you for exams and are only as valuable as your integrity makes them You have been warned For information regarding the official code of conduct and university academic integrity policy please see the course website or your Student Packet CH110 FA10 SAS 9 Why study chemistry Am I ever going to use it 1 Medicine What fraction of a dose will be bio available and active chemical structure solubility equilibrium 2 Materials and Engineering What materials would you choose to build the various parts of an airplane periodicity chemistry of the elements reactivity 3 Energy Which chemicals make the best fuels for a particular purpose chemical structure thermodynamics reactivity equilibrium CH110 FA10 SAS 10 Balloons Micro explains macro He vs H2 Why study chemistry Because it is the central science It is the study of matter its transformations In this course you will Learn the language of chemistry and gain general knowledge Learn to understand how structure affects function Connect microscopic properties to macroscopic properties Learn how energy is stored in molecules and how we can use it Learn modern analytical techniques and instrumentation How do we use scientific reasoning to find the solution to interesting problems and address how well we know them CH110 FA10 SAS 11 Flaming Flask Demo Breaks things up Overview of Chem 110 Overall Key Themes Structure affects function Connect macroscopic to microscopic Study of energy Problem solving skills See the Condensed Concepts overview at the end of this packet Course Method Atoms First Approach Chapter 1 Matter and Measurement Chapter 2 Atoms Molecules
