Textbook: Brown, LeMay, Bursten, & Murphy; Chemistry: The Central Science, 11thed., 2009. Required.Note: Half Text (“Volume 1”) is an option. Do not purchase Volume 1 if you will take Chem 112!2. Fall Chem 110 Student Packet. Required.3. Wilson Solutions to Exercises in Chemistry, The Central Science, 11thed. Highly Recommended.4. Non-text programmable calculator –Required. What is Chemistry 110?CH110 FA10 SAS 31. From the Course Packet:Chemistry 110 is the first in a two-course sequence ingeneral chemistry. Chemistry impacts every area inour lives: from how our bodies work, to theenvironment, to new materials, to how we live andwork. Our goals for this course are for you torecognize that what happens at the molecular levelprofoundly affects our macroscopic world and how funchemistry is. By the end of Chem 110, you willunderstand conceptually (1) how atoms combind toform molecules; (2) how molecules interact and reactwith each other; and (3) how the molecular-levelstructure affects the macroscopic properties.2. From MEChemistry 110 expands on what you already knowfrom previous chemistry courses, teaches yousome new concepts, introduces you to scientificreasoning, and applies these ideas to importanttopics regardless of what your major is. It is thekey concepts and ideas (the “big picture”) that wehope you take from this course (e.g. what you willremember a year from now). They will befoundational for almost any career you choose.Should you be here?CH110 FA10 SAS 4No previous chemistry experience?Chem 101 is a better option; Chem110 is NOT appropriate for you!Prerequisites for Chem 110see general course info on website• Algebra• High school chemistry • Chapters 1, 2 in text• Familiarity with Chapters 3, 4, 10NOTE: Chem 110 assumes previous exposure to Chemistry—we move very quicklyChem 108 is 1-credit add-on course to Chem 110 for students needing more help (you can add now during the drop/add period)Who am I?CH110 FA10 SAS 5Name: Dr. Alan BenesiDegrees: BS, University of California at Santa CruzPh.D., University of California at BerkeleyHometown: Berkeley, CAJob: Director of the NMRFacility and Senior Lecturerin ChemistryResearch: All aspects of NMR spectroscopy. Dynamics of water at interfaces and in solids.Who are your TAs?CH110 FA10 SAS 6If you have been assigned to a section associated with the 4:40 pm lecture:Johnson, Robert [email protected] 79, 80, & 86Bittner, Danielle [email protected] 81, 82, & 88Nagle, Brittney [email protected] 83, 87, & 89Kafle, Kubindra [email protected] 85, 90, & 91Carrie Ryan [email protected] 84You are very fortunate to have an excellent group of TAs! Utilize their knowledge to get the most out of this course. Don’t let the online homework and quizzes fool you into thinking you don’t need them!My expectationsCH110 FA10 SAS 71. You will take personal responsibility and pride in everything you do for this course. The TAs and I do not give you points: YOU EARN THEM. We are here to help.2. You will take ownership of this course–know the requirements, know and adhere to deadlines, follow procedures and deadlines. The course website, ANGEL, and course packet are excellent resources: utilize them to keep current on course announcements and to find supplemental materials!3.Be responsible for doing what you need to do to learn and master the material in advance of exams (different for different people), and utilize the numerous available resources.Set up cooperative study groups and do your homework together. There is no curve so you cannot hurt yourself by working with others (which is a stupid mentality anyway). My expectations (continued)CH110 FA10 SAS 84. Do not wait until the last minute! That is a sure way to fail, or at the very least fall very far behind and add un-needed stress.5. Treat everyone with respect at all times –everyone is here to learn, do the best that they can, and get the most out of their college experience (even if you don’t think so now, you will in 10 years!)Which brings us to Cell Phones:Turn Them Off When you get to class! And lastly……DON’T CHEAT!CH110 FA10 SAS 9Cheating is disrespectful of everybody in this room (most importantly yourself) and is not worth the consequences! We (me, the TAs, the proctors) are tech-savvy students and former students who know about all ways to cheat using old tricks and new technology, and we regularly look for such breaches of ethical behavior. Don’t think, naively, that you can cheat on a test without getting caught. It’s a risk that’s not worth taking. While it is not as easy for us to catch you cheating on your online homework and quizzes, remember that they are designed to prepare you for examsand are only as valuable as your integrity makes them. You have been warned. For information regarding the official code of conduct and university academic integrity policy, please see the course website or your Student Packet. Why study chemistry? Am I ever going to use it?CH110 FA10 SAS 101. MedicineWhat fraction of a dose will be bio-available and active? (chemical structure, solubility, equilibrium)2.Materials and EngineeringWhat materials would you choose to build the various parts of an airplane? (periodicity, chemistry of the elements, reactivity)3.EnergyWhich chemicals make the best fuels for a particular purpose? (chemical structure, thermodynamics, reactivity, equilibrium)Why study chemistry?CH110 FA10 SAS 11Because it is the central science. It is the study of matter & its transformations. In this course you will:• Learn the language of chemistry and gain general knowledge• Learn to understand how structure affects function•
