CH 151 K 8 Chemistry Outreach Activities January 2014 Course Description Development of hands on activities to fulfill physical science goals required by Maine Learning Results Activities will be implemented in area classrooms and on campus For information about previous activities see CH151 webpage http www colby edu chemistry CH151 c urrent CH151 current html Course Goals You will develop three activities with modifications for different age levels You will run your activities in area classrooms and at Colby You will also assist your classmates while they run their activities in area classrooms Timeline First week develop activities Second and third weeks take activities into local schools Fourth week activities at Colby with Chemistry Magic Show Last day final Teacher Kits lab notebook are due in class presentations First Week Details Monday 9 30 lecture 1 00 lab Tuesday 9 30 lecture meetings with Lisa in afternoon Wednesday Magic Show meeting at 9 30 lab open 8 4 Thursday lab open 8 4 Friday 9 30 lab presentations tiedye shirts Second Week Outreach visits begin on Monday Your first activity must be ready to go with Teacher Kit reviewed by Lisa You must be on time and prepared for your classroom visits i e be professional Third Week Magic Show rehearsal on Monday Outreach visits continue Your second and third activities must be ready to go Fourth Week Colby visits on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday In class presentations on Thursday Notebook and final electronic versions of Teacher Kit due on Thursday with web description Maine Learning Results Chemistry Structure of Matter Energy Inquiry and problem solving Scientific reasoning Communication Maine Learning Results Matter Structure of Matter Students will understand the structure of matter and the changes it undergoes chemical physical and nuclear Maine Learning Results Matter K 2 Show that large things are made of smaller pieces Describe physical properties of objects Group objects based on characteristics e g color Example take apart and reassemble a toy truck Maine Learning Results Matter 3 4 Describe how physical properties of objects change during chemical reactions Explain how matter changes in both chemical and physical ways Example investigate a burning candle Maine Learning Results Matter 5 8 Density Atoms Periodic table States of matter Elements compounds and mixtures Conservation of matter Maine Learning Results Energy Energy Students will understand concepts of energy Energy takes many forms which can exert forces and do work The conversion of energy offers useful applications and sometimes presents problems Maine Learning Results Energy K 2 The sun gives off light and heat energy Explain why living things need energy Example compare the growth of plants in different light conditions Maine Learning Results Energy 3 4 Identify different forms of energy e g light sound heat Explain ways different forms of energy can be produced Example prove that sounds are caused by vibrational energy Maine Learning Results Energy 5 8 Energy conversions Conservation of energy Compare the ways energy travels e g waves conduction Electricity Energy resources Maine Learning Results Inquiry Inquiry and problem solving Students will apply inquiry and problem solving approaches in science and technology Make measurements Observe collect data Design experiments Maine Learning Results Reasoning Scientific reasoning students will learn to formulate and justify ideas and to make informed decisions Maine Learning Results Communication Communication students will communicate effectively in the applications of science and technology Chemistry Outreach In the field Improvise adapt and overcome Unofficial motto of the U S Marine Corps Chemistry Outreach Planning the activity Learning goals Hook Safety cost and availability of materials Age group appropriate Create engaging student materials Chemistry Outreach Effective hooks Unsolved mysteries Language Arts connection poem picture book movie Demonstration Connection to prior knowledge Chemistry Outreach Unsolved mysteries Who took Mr Bear Chemistry Outreach Chemistry Outreach Unsolved mysteries Who took Mr Bear Chemistry Outreach The results of several simple tests are compiled to solve the mystery Paper chromatography of pen inks Comparison of paper Reactions of acids and bases Iodine test for starch Chemistry Outreach Unsolved mysteries Who took Mr Bear Nancy Drew and the mystery of Mayflower Hill Art fraud Alfredo Fettuccini artist 1600 1650 Chemistry Outreach Language Arts connection Harry Potter Wally Levinger and Grainger 2005 Employing Popular Children s Literature To Teach Elementary School Chemistry An Engaging Outreach Program Journal of Chemical Education 82 1489 2010 Harry Potter Activity 1 Troll Toothpaste 2 Magical Liquids Density Column 3 The Mystery of the Missing Sorting Hat Allie Todd 10 Troll Toothpaste The decomposition of hydrogen peroxide produces H2O and O2 g 2H2O2 l H2O l 2O2 g Magical Liquids Density Column Students created a density column of Mandrake sputum honey Dragon blood Karo syrup Goblin Snot liquid dish soap Slug slime canola oil Basilisk venom rubbing alcohol Gillyweed poison lamp oil Students hypothesized where the Werewolf milk would settle when added to the density column The Mystery of the Missing Sorting Hat Parchment Chromatography The chromatography itself took nearly 30 minutes to complete which allowed for other portions of the mystery to be solved Mystery Powders Initially used plaster of Paris no fun reactions but replaced it with baking powder fun reactions Students loved having their own spot plates and pipettes Glowing Paint Hermione s fingerprint was exposed when the pens were subjected to UV light Chemistry Outreach Language Arts connection Harry Potter Myth Busters Mentos Diet Coke Eepy Bird Chemistry Outreach When preparing the activity Remember that kids HATE worksheets Remember that little kids can t read Make sure your instructions are age appropriate Remember that kids LOVE dramatic effects like color changes fizzing etc Chemistry Outreach Special requests Geology Earth Science for 3rd graders Energy for 5th graders Interesting visible absorbance experiment using Spec20 s for high school biology or chem Chemistry Outreach Before you start the activity Introduce yourself with enthusiasm Explain the goals of the activity Establish safety guidelines Chemistry Outreach During the activity Keep your voice loud and clear Project enthusiasm
