Gender and Globalization (Soc 472)Group ProjectInstructions:This assignment requires that your group report on the story of an individual woman as told in the book, Women in the Material World, and to analyze the context of that woman’s life by placing her story in a larger historical, social, and cultural context. Your report should do the following:a. Tell us the story of the woman’s life that you have chosen to focus on. This is a very descriptive part of the report. You are simply summarizing the information from, Women in the Material World, and material from any other resources that you find useful to her story. The goal of this section of the report is to bring gender issues in the country under study alive through the personal story of one particular woman. If possible, try to scan the woman’s picture onto a power point presentation. b. Now draw on other sources to expand on the information provided in, Women in the Material World. You will want to report health statistics, female literacy rates, birth rates, and any other demographic information that is available through organizations like the World Health Organization, the United Nations, etc. This section should include any information on gender relations in the region that you are studying. Are there any feminist groups/organizations? Did you findany NGOs that are working with women on local projects? c. In the final part of your report you will analyze your region in relationship to the themes discussed in the course. You can focus on gender and economics (e.g., development, IMF and World Bank policies, alternative development projects likethe Grameen Bank or NGOs). For instance, you will want to find out if the regionyou are studying is under a structural adjustment program. Then, you will want toanalyze how this might impact gender relations in the region under study. You can bring in an analysis of marriage, family and gender roles in the region under study. You can also bring in topics not discussed in the course. For instance, you might want to include an analysis of Westernization, popular culture and gender.Technical DetailsDividing the Work among Group Members:Each member of the group must make an equal contribution to the final project. The group will decide on the division of labor. Try to settle any disputes on your own. Suggestion for dividing the laborDo a little reading on your region and then meet as a group and decide what sub-sections you want to cover in your report. Then try to estimate how much work each sub-section will be. However, dividing by numbers alone is not a good guide. Each section will take a different amount of research and intellectual work. For instance, the first section is simply a summary of the material in the book on reserve, while the last section of the report (analysis of gender in the region) is intellectually taxing. The amount of research and the level of analysis should figure into your decision. Each group member must contribute the writing of the final report. You should include an index that list topics/sub-sections in the report and identifies the person who wrote thatsection. Here is an example:IndexSection 1. An overview of women in Iran: Compiled by Jane SmithSection 2. NGOs in Iran: Compiled by John DoeYou may choose one group member to compile the final report, or you may work on the final project together. I suggest that you standardize the format of the report before each member begins writing their section. In other words, you should agree on margins, a font, etc. The Final Product:The final report should be typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins and 12-point font. The report can be anywhere from 12 to 20 pages in length. Do not put the report in those annoying plastic binders. Staple or clip the report together. The report should include: a cover page with the title, date, and the names of the group members; an index (see above); the body of the report; and, the
