KINS2010 1st Edition Lecture 1 Outline of Current Lecture I. KinesiologyA. DefinitionsB. General CategoriesII. Exercisea. Physical FitnessIII. Equations and DefinitionsIV. Sources of Kinesiology KnowledgeCurrent LectureIntro to KinesiologyKinesiology- from the word kinetic to produce or cause motion and the word kinesis meaning movement- Greek word Kine means to moveVarious names of kinesiology:- Medical- PT, OT, food, and nutrition- Physical education- Sports Management- business side of kinesiologyKinesiology is a discipline (a body of knowledge organized around a theme of focus) of humanphysical activityMany definitions for Physical activity(Book) Physical Activity- voluntary movement intentionally preformed to achieve/move towards a goal in sport, exercise or some other sphere of life. (Too exclusive) Physical Activity- bodily movement that is produced by skeletal muscles and substantially increases energy expenditure.- By substantial we mean exercise - This excludes skeletal muscle activity that can occur without movement: for paralysis victims if you take an electrobe and activate the muscles for them it is a huge benefit These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.and when you push against something very large, but do not physically move you’re still using muscles.(Teacher’s Definition) Physical Activity- skeletal muscle activation preformed to achieve a goal in sport, exercise or some other sphere of life. Movements that are not physical activity:- Not voluntary- eye blinks, coughing, sleep movements, shivering, muscle spasms- Not purposeful- fidgeting, aimless, movement- Not focused on non-voluntary movementsTwo general categories of physical activity:1. Skilled movements:a. Sport skillb. Motor skills2. Exercise:a. Health relatedb. Training/conditioning for sportc. Therapeutic- helps people with a wide variety (strength in bones and muscles as well as balance)Exercise is not the same as physical activity. Exercise is a type of physical activityExercise is a subset of physical activity that is planned, structured, and repetitive. It also has a final or an intermediate objective to improve or maintain some aspect of physical fitness. - Physical fitness- physical factors related to the ability to perform physical activity. Major factors include muscular endurance, aerobic power, body composition, flexibility and muscular strengtho Muscular endurance- the ability to sustain physical activity for extended periods of time without stopping Endurance- how long can you keep what you’re doingo Aerobic power- maximal oxygen consumption or VO2 max. The more oxygen you consume the more fit you are, the faster you are the longer you can go. Aerobic fitness is strongly associated with good health and freedom from disease- Relative risk of death is consistently lower among those with higher aerobic capacityo Body composition-the proportion of fat, water, bone, and other lean tissue constituents of the human body Four components: percentage of body fats, bone health, water, and lean tissueo Flexibility- range of motion about the body’s jointso Muscular strength- the maximal amount of force produced by a muscle or musclegroup The greatest decline in older people is muscular strengthEquations/DefinitionsWork= force times distance- One joule= 1 kilogram times 1 meter against gravityPower= work divided by time- 1 watt= 1 joule per secondCalorie= amount of heat needed to raise 1 kilogram of water by one degree celcius- 1 kcal= 4.1858 joulesThree sources of Kinesiology knowledge:1. Experiential2. Theoretical/ Research3. Professional PracticeExperiencing Physical Activity:- Direct Participation in physical activity is an important source of kinesiology knowledge- Observation of physical activity is an important source of kinesiology knowledge- Primary Spheres of experience are:o Educationo Leisureo Healtho Competitiono Self-sufficiencyo Self-expressiono
