Employment OpportunitiesCurrent LectureSports Management – Dr. Zhang Growth of the Sport Industry- Became one of the largest industries in North America due to:o Growing interest in leisure activities o Adoption of healthy lifestyleso Augmentation of sport competitions and eventso Americans like to exercise and be active. It helps us socially and mentally- Sport leagues, teams, and events have been an integral part in forming the cultural and economic basis for many communities and have become one of the most popular leisureand entertainment options in North America.- Hardly anyone will go the whole weekend without direct or indirect relationship to sports. - In the past 20 years over 2 billion in sales compared to before. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. (10 billion dollars each game)Resilient Industry- The estimated size of the sport industry has risen sharply in recent years, from $213 billion at the end of the 1990’s to over $425 billion in 2010- Gross Domestic Producto Sports advertisement-15%o Sporting good- 13%o Spectator- 13%o Event Operations- 12%o Sport gamble- 10%o Sport travel- 8%o Sport Professional service- 8%o Sport medicine- 7%o Licensed product- 5%o Less than 5% sports media, sponsorships, facility, multimedia, and internet covering sports- The live events only are 15% of the sports industry GDSP.- Last year was over 100 billion dollars. So we were less than last year. o Due to getting anything that we want to know on our cell phones, going to the actual game is less attractive. Examples:1. Professional sport has the most spectators in the industry. a. 43 professional leagues:i. 25 baseballii. 4 footballiii. 4 basketballiv. 10 Hockeyb. Professional sports in cities create new business and generate revenue-> shows how much power they have in modern society. 2. Collegiate sport a. NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA are the governing bodies over college sports (NCAA is the leader)b. NCAA- 1200 member institutions that are either division I, II, or IIIc. 2010 NCAA= 5 billion dollar enterprise and is continuing to grow. d. Growth of revenues continues steadily, but expenses grow fater. e. Average athletic expenses had grown 7-8% annually, which is over the 3.7% average annual increase in total university spending. i. Due to coaches’ salaries, facility expansions, title IX requirements, ect.Growth of the Discipline- Over 300 academic programs in North America- Ranked top 10 Businesses in the US- Sport is of high social profile- Elevate student interests- Decreased student interest in traditional P.E. careers- Faculty transferring from other areas- Over 2/3rds of the programs have masters degrees- Over 50 programs claim to have doctoral degrees; criteria of distinction include professional training, research orientation, scholarly productivity, and professional reputation.UGA Program- Undergrad program started in 1980’so Currently 200 studentso General education courses, business courses, sports management core, electives and internship. - Master’s(non-thesis) program established in mid-1980’so Currently 70 studentso Two campuses: Athens and Gwinnett- A parallel(thesis) program was established in 2000’so Currently 5-6 students- PhD also began in 2000’so 20 students currentlyo 4-5 visiting scholars and/or doctoral students- Six tenured or tenure line faculty members and one lecturer o Three professors, one associate professor and two assistant professors.o Widely considered one of the top growing programs in US o Research publicationso Doctoral student trainingo National and international conference presentationso Research funding- Benefitted from the success of Bulldog athletic program- The International Center for Sport Management Education (ICSM) is currently being established.NASSM- Established in mid-1980’s - Leading organization of the discipline- Over 1,000 members mainly faculty, students, and occasionally industrial experts- Governed by elected officials and board members, with over twelve functional committees. - Business headquarter->Slippery Rock, PA.- Annual conference rotating - Publications: JSM, SMEJ and electronic newspaper with well-developed listserv- Initiation of a research grant system. - Commit to global internship- International contributions and relations with pacific ocean, Europe, Asia, South Americaand Africa- International Membership- Promotion of globalized curriculum- Promotion of intercontinental and interregional research- Challenges:o Unplanned and uncontrollable growtho Lack of trained and qualified facultyo External funding expectations in research I institutionso Downplay the value of writing textbook in research I institutionso Limitations in research topic selectiono Sports Management journals are of low or no impact factorsEmployment Opportunities- General Categories:o Administrationo Marketingo Entrepreneuro Mediao Representationo Other- 10,000 new jobs in Sports Management industry
