The primary course objectives are for the students enrolled in thecourse: (1) to develop mastery of basic statistical concepts; (2) to develop the ability toapply these concepts correctly, especially in problems originating in the life sciences; and(3) to learn to communicate effectively in writing the results of a statistical analysis to anon-statistical audience.• Calculator. A scientific calculator (with logarithms, exponents, trigonometric functions,simple memory and recall, and factorial) will be necessary.• Course Webpage. http://www.stat.wisc.edu/courses/st371-hanlon/The course webpage will include an evolving schedule of lectures, homework assignments,supplementary notes, and other information useful for the course. In particular, pleasecheck the lecture notes regularly. We will post the slides that are to be presented in classand also post the readings that should be done prior to c lass.• Homework. There will be weekly homework assignments. Assignments are given onThursdays or Fridays (posted on the website). HW is due the following Friday at 4:00pm in your TA’s mailbox. You can of course submit your HW early (TA’s mailbox), butno late HW will be accepted. Your homework solutions must be well organized andneat. This way, you will demonstrate your ability to communicate your results.• Exams. There will be one midterm and one final e xam. You will be allowed one standardsheet of paper (front and back) with notes for each exam. Makeup exams can be a logisticnightmare, and so they will be allowed only with a reasonable and documented excuse,and only if I have been notified in advance.• Grading. Your grade will be determined by homework assignments (10%), one midterm(40% each), and a cumulative final (50 %). I will assign course grades according to thefollowing scale, though this may be adjusted if it turns out that I’ve been too harsh.Course Points Grade94–100 % A90–94 % AB80–90 % B75 – 80 % BC60 – 75 % C55 – 60 % D0–55 % F• Honors. You are encouraged to talk to other students, your teaching assis-tant, or me about your homework. I am convinced it is beneficial to solve problems withother students; sharing and discussing ideas with others is helpful in the learning process.However, you may not present other people’s work as your own. If you work with otherstudents solving problems, you still have to write up your own solution independently.You must work independently during exams.• Important Dates.1. Midterm exam.
