ENC 1102- Freshman Composition IISpring 2012Instructor: Ashley [email protected] OBJECTIVESENC 1102 is designed to improve critical reading and analysis skills through discussion and examination, both verbal and written, of selected works of literature. It is also designed to develop research skills through the successful completion of a research paper.REQUIRED TEXT AND MATERIALSKirszner, Laurie G., and Stephen R. Mandell. Portable Literature: Readings, Reacting, Writing.7th ed. Boston: Wadsworth, 2010.- Reliable electronic storage-USB drive- blue or black pens, loose-leaf notebook paper - spiral notebook or folder for journal writing, - pocket folder (for research paper)- staplerCOURSE WORKFor this course, students are required to write essays outside and during class, as well as complete readings, homework, classroom assignments and a formal research paper. Students will also be required to complete an in-class presentation/discussion on a reading of their choice. Reader Response/ Journal EntriesAt each class you will be required to complete either a reader response activity or journal entry related to the reading assignment or lecture material. Journal entries will be free writing activities; therefore, they will not be graded for grammar or mechanics. They will, however, be periodically evaluated based on relevance and thoughtfulness of the response. ** Response papers cannot be made up in the event of an absence; however, the lowest score will be dropped and will not count toward the final grade. Research PaperDuring the semester you will learn additional methods/tools to conduct college-level research and will be required to complete a research paper by the end of the semester. The paper should be between 1200-1500 words in length, fully researched, and accuratelydocumented according to MLA style. Failure to turn in the research paper by the required due date will result in an F for the course. ESSAYSAll essays are due at the beginning of class. If you are late on a day that an essay is due, your paper is late as well. For every class that your essay is late, one letter grade will be deducted. If you are absent the day a paper is due, it is your responsibility to have someone deliver your paper to class on time. If that is not possible, and I receive prior notice, you may send it via Atlas before the assigned due date. Please note: I will not accept assignments electronically unless otherwise arranged prior to the due date. FORMAT:Each out-of-class essay must be typed, double-spaced, meet the requirement length per assignment, and should follow MLA standards. Each essay should be spell-checked and free from typos and grammatical errors. Please make sure all essays are stapled before handing in. Format all papers with the proper heading and the following information (double spaced and in the top LEFT corner of your paper).Your nameMy nameENC 1102DateEssay #Research Paper and all Documented EssaysThe research paper, as well as any other documented essay will require several steps of the writing process prior to completion. In order to receive credit for such assignments, you MUST include the ENTIRE WRITING PROCESS: brainstorming, outline, draft(s), peer editing, along with the final draft by the specified due date. Peer Review/In-Class WorkshopsPeer reviews and in-class workshops offer students an opportunity to have a classmate review their paper prior to editing and revision. Each workshop/ review session is done inclass; therefore, it is an activity that cannot be made up. This is a valuable opportunity forstudents to seek guidance on specific questions/ issues that they may have. Students who show up for these sessions without a typed and printed draft will be marked absent for that day and WILL NOT receive credit for their draft, which will negatively impact the grade of the assignment. ATTENDANCEAttendance is expected and required. There are NO excused absences, so make sure that your schedule allows you to attend all classes. After three absences, an excessive warningwill be sent via Atlas. Four absences are grounds for withdrawal from the course. After four absences, you WILL automatically be withdrawn from the course. In addition, students who arrive more than 15 minutes late or leave early without the instructor’s prior approval will be considered absent from that class meeting. Absence from class is not an excuse for late or missed assignments. In the event of an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to contact a classmate regarding assignments prior to the next class meeting. Note: Many classes will begin with short quizzes or writing activities on assigned readings/ homework. Students arriving late will not be permitted to take such quizzes or make up these assignments. CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE Students are expected to arrive prepared and on time, ready to participate in classwork and discussions. They are expected to bring the appropriate textbook, as well as writing materials to every class. Please make sure to take care of all personal issues (restroom, phone calls, etc.) before class so as to avoid disruptions during class. Arriving late, leaving the classroom during class, packing up books and papers before class ends, and leaving class early is considered distracting behavior and simply will not be tolerated. Tardiness: In the case of chronic tardiness, a warning notice will be sent to the student; any lates after that notice will count as an absence. In addition, if you arrive more than 15minutes late (for any reason) you will be counted as absent for that day. All cell phones and other electronic devices should be turned off or switched to silentand put away before class starts: I DO NOT WANT TO EVEN SEE THEM. If you are caught texting you will be asked to leave the classroom and will be marked absent forthat day. If you have an emergency situation in which your phone must be on vibrate please let me know before class begins. Please note: Actions taken regarding disruptive behavior, including asking a student to leave due to talking, ringing or vibrating cellphones, texting, or any other inappropriateand/or unnecessary interruption of class, should not be taken personally as they are only implemented to ensure that all students in my classroom receive a fair and respectful educational experience.
