In a series of interrelated courses in the liberal arts and sciences, it provides the opportunity for them to acquire the intellectual skills and knowledge characteristic of educated persons. Thus, it lays the foundation for success in their academic, professional, and personal lives. Whereas the major program contributes to a college education depth in a designated specialization, the General Education Program provides breadth by introducing and connecting a variety of disciplines. Program Goals: The General Education Program at KSU has five goals. During the course of the program, students should achieve the following: develop productive habits of mind develop effective communication skills expand knowledge and understanding expand creative capabilities exhibit understanding of the impact of ethical and aesthetic values GENERAL EXPECTATIONS Students are expected to attend all classes and are expected to arrive on time and to remain in class for the entire class session. Summer school class sessions comprise of one hundred fifty minutes. There will be a 10-15 minutes break during each summer school class session, to be determined by the instructor. There are no “excused” absences; for each full-class session absence in excess of one, three points will be deducted from the student’s final grade average. In other words, a student may miss one entire class session without penalty. If a student is habitually late, the instructor reserves the right to determine if a tardy constitutes an absence. Turn off all cell phones when you arrive in class. Classes will start on time. If for some reason you find it necessary to arrive late, you will be responsible for all information, including announcements or changes to the syllabus, etc., made during your absence. If you are absent for the entire class session, you are also responsible for all assignments and other announcements made during the class meeting. You are, therefore, strongly advised to frequently access the course WebCT site as well as have contact information for other students in the class. Students are responsible for all announcements and assignments made in class, even if not listed on the syllabus. Students must assume personal responsibility to find out if any announcements or assignments were made in class during their absences. WebCT will be integrated into the FRENCH 1001 course as a platform for information and resource delivery and instructional support. Students enrolled in FRENCH 1001 are expected to regularly access the course site and are responsible for announcements, assignments, and materials posted on the course WebCT site. The focus of the Modern Language & Culture program at KSU is to equip students with the necessary content, means, and learning environment to foster growth in language proficiency. Becoming proficient in a foreign language requires competence in content knowledge and productive skills. That is to say, simply knowing about the foreign language and culture is not sufficient for meeting the ML & C proficiency goals. Learners must be able to use the foreign language in culturally appropriate ways for meaningful oral and written communication. Acquiring proficiency in language use necessitates skill-building; skill growth and progress only result from practice. Simply put, there is a performance component to the FRENCH 1001 course. This means that you must be actively engaged in class, both physically and mentally. The instructor will speak French in the classroom; students are expected to do the same. Further, you will often work in groups, and your group participation is as important as your participation in general class activities. You should arrive in class ready to actively participate. Class time will be used to advance the development of the four basic language skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading comprehension, and writing. In addition, class time will be devoted to fostering the understanding and appreciation of francophone cultures. You are expected to study and practice at home as part of your daily preparation. Tutors are also available in the Foreign Language Resource Center (PS 134) at no charge to the student.FREN1001 Summer 2009 Dr. Hoyt 3 All homework assignments are to be finished by the time class begins. No late homework will be accepted. No make-up tests or assignments will be given. A grade of “0” will be assigned for all work not turned in or any tests not taken. Emergencies will be handled on an individual basis. Students enrolled in FRENCH 1001 will earn a letter grade based upon the assignments listed in the course outline and as posted on the course WebCT site. Grading criteria and details of individual assignments will also be posted on WebCT as well as detailed in
