Smith and Roland B. Minton, Calculus, Second Edition, Mc Graw Hill.Course Grade: Your grade will be based on 6 components: class partecipation, homework,quizzes, mid-term exams, gateway exams, and the final exam. The total points you receive in thiscourse is based on the following table.Homework 100 pointsQuizzes 100 pointsExam I 125 pointsExam II 125 pointsExam III 125 pointsExam IV 125 pointsFinal Exam 200 pointsGateway I 10 pointsGateway II 10 pointsClass Partecipation 80Total 1000 pointsHomework: Homework will be assigned each day and will usually be exactly what is on the syllabus,but sometimes there may be a few changes to that. You are expected to do the homework problemsregularly.On Thursdays students will be asked to work some homework problems at the board. You areexpected to present solutions. Your partecipation in this part of the class counts as 8% of the totalgrade.Along the semester I will collect five written homework assigments. You are supposed to workthe homework assigment in groups of three/four people, each group will turn in one assigmentand the grade will be equally divided among the componets of the group. At the begining of thesemester we will form the groups. You are not allowed to change group.Quizzes: Ten short, in-class quizzes will be given most on Fridays. The quiz problems will similarto the list of homework problems. There My intention is to write quizzes so that the student whodiligently does all of the homework and keeps up with the class will do well on them. You will beallowed to use calculators on the quizzes. Additionally, I will drop your lowest quiz score so as toaccommodate unavoidable absences, but absolutely no make-up quizzes will be given.Mid-terms: There will be four in-class tests, given on the dates indicated on the syllabus. You willbe allowed to use calculators on the exams.Gateway exams: Math 208 can be very hard if your differantiation and integration skills have gottenrusty. For this reason there are there are two web-based exams one for differentiation and one forintegration. You can take them as many time as you want in the following range of days: from 8/31to 9/14 for the differentiation test, from 9/27 to 10/10 for the integration test. It is a pass/no-passexam. There is no partial credit and you need 8 rigth answers out of 10 to pass. More informationon the math department web-page.Final: The final for this class will be comprehensive and will be given 6:00-8:00 pm Thursday, Dec.14. Calculators are allowed on the final.Note: The instructor reserves the right to modify the schedules (e.g. office hours, Homework Duedates, etc) and procedures in this syllabus. Any such changes will be announced in class. It is thestudent’s responsability to keep informed of such changes.Department Grading Appeals Policy: The Department of Mathematics does not toleratediscrimination or harassment on basis of race, gender, religion or sexual orientation.
