Psychology 100A Psychological Statistics Fall 2006 Meetings Class MW 2 00 3 15pm Franz 1178 Discussion F 2 00 2 50 pm Franz 1178 Final Examination Code 07 Friday December 15 2006 8 00am 11 00am Instructor Ladan Shams Office hours Monday and Wednesday 3 30pm 4 30pm Franz Hall 7445B Teaching Assistant Kristin Janschewitz Office hours Tuesday and Thursday 2 30 3 30 pm Franz Hall 7582 Email kjansche ucla edu Textbook Harold O Kiess Statistical concepts for the behavioral sciences 3rd Edition Overview In this course we will cover the basic data analysis concepts and procedures used by research psychologists The course will briefly review ways of describing data descriptive statistics and methods of evaluating hypotheses and testing psychological theories inferential statistics Examples will be drawn almost exclusively from the psychological literature Specific topics include correlation t tests and ANOVA Course Requirements and Grading It is very important that you attend all classes in order to keep up with the material Your grade will depend on your performance on midterm and final exams There will be two midterm exams each worth 50 points The final exam is worth 100 points The exams will be multiple choice Statistics is naturally cumulative but the exams emphasize recent materials Exams include material from the book and the class Your final course grade will be based roughly on the Psychology Department recommended curve top 20 A and A 30 B B and B 40 C C C and 10 everything else As for the Provost s policy exam scores or final grades will not be changed under any circumstances unless a clerical error was made Of course it is grossly unfair to all students if we ever allowed anything but the scores to determine the grade Fairness is very important and fairness is the reason why a student will NEVER be able to increase their grade after the course is done Missing Exam No early or make up exams will be given Under certain EXTREME conditions severe medical illness with complete medical documentation or death of an IMMEDIATE family member a missing midterm can be substituted with the score of the final exam Missing the FINAL exam will result in an F No incompletes extra credit etc are given in 100A Exam Procedure Two points will be subtracted if your name or student I D number is not correctly written or bubbled in on the scantron and test forms All scores will be posted on the my ucla website Cheating Anyone caught cheating during an exam will receive an F zero points for the exam and be reported to the Dean of Students Book and Calculator You may not use your book for the exams but you will need a calculator Bring extra fresh batteries Failing to bring a calculator will severely compromise your ability to complete the exams Note During the exams you are only allowed to use the Aurora calculator sold at the bookstore 3 95 or the calculator sold at the Psychology storeroom FH A225 Date Topic Chapters October 2 October 4 Introductory Materials Describing distributions of variables Central tendency 1 2 3 4 October 9 October 11 Variability Standardized distributions Area under normal distributions 5 6 6 October 16 October 18 Sampling distributions Confidence Intervals t distribution 7 7 October 23 October 25 Hypothesis testing One sample z test and one sample t test 8 8 October 30 November 1 Midterm Exam 1 Two sample independent T tests 9 November 6 November 8 Two sample dependent T tests Two sample dependent T tests 9 9 November 13 November 15 power One way ANOVA 9 10 November 20 November 22 Post hoc tests Two way ANOVA Midterm Exam 2 10 11 November 27 November 29 Two way ANOVA Two way ANOVA 11 11 December 4 December 6 One way repeated measures ANOVA Correlation 12 13 Final Examination Code 07 Friday December 15 2006 8 00am 11 00am
