COURSE SYLLABUS SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY Department of Educational Administration and Counseling Course No: CP-615 Revision: Spring 2000 Title of Course: Career Development THE COUNSELOR AS COMPETENT PROFESSIONAL EDUCATOR I. Catalog Description and Credit Hours of Course: Study of career development theories and decision-making models, career planning, career education, sources of educational and occupational information, nature and structure of the world of work, and leisure and lifestyle development. (3) II. Prerequisites: None III. Purposes or Objectives of the Course (MoSTEP 1.4.1.4): A. The students will develop an understanding of the major career development theories and decision-making models. (CACREP K4a) B. The students will become acquainted with the major career assessment instruments and techniques. (CACREP K4f, K7g) C. The students will be able to identify the major sources of career, vocational, educational, occupational and labor market information. (CACREP K4b) D. The students will develop an operational understanding of the components involved in career development programs. (CACREP K4c) E. The students will become knowledgeable about the interaction of career development theory and decision-making models, career assessment, information about the world of work, the interrelationships between work, family, leisure, lifestyle, gender and ethnicity with the counseling processes, techniques and ethics appropriate for diverse populations. (CACREP K4d) F. The students will be expected to understand the use of computers in careerassessment and in processing, storage and retrieval of career information.
