We will refer to the texts in class from time to time. Grading: Grades will be based on three evening exams (100 points each), quizzes (100 points), homework (50 points), and a comprehensive final exam (150 points). 360 of the 600 points (60%) is the lowest passing grade. Exams: The three exam dates are Thursday, September 15 in PHYS 112 or 114; Thursday, October 13 in LILY 1105; and Wednesday, November 16 in LILY 1105. All exams are 7:00-8:00 p.m. Put these dates on your calendar. Make-up exams will be given only if you have a valid excuse and the instructor or course coordinator have been notified prior to the exam. If you are unable to notify your instructor or course coordinator prior to the exam, official documentation for the missed exam must be provided. Unexcused absence from an exam will result in a score of zero on the exam. Homework: Homework is collected every day except possibly before exams and at the end of the semester. Some homework may be excused at the instructor’s discretion. Late homework will not be accepted. Homework should be done neatly and with care, all steps must be shown, and multiple pages must be stapled. Correct answers without work or with incorrect work may not receive credit. Quizzes: A quiz will be given each week except possibly during exam weeks. In exceptional cases, a small number of quizzes may be excused by the instructor for valid reasons (e.g., illness, field trips, etc.). No make-up quizzes will be given, and quizzes will not be given early. Attendance: Students are expected to attend every class meeting, and attendance will be recorded daily. Instructors, at their own discretion, may refuse to grade a homework or quiz if you are absent for all or part of a class period. Arithmetic Skills Test: A prerequisite for passing this course is successful completion of an arithmetic skills test. That is, without successfully completing the test, a student cannot pass the course. Successful completion of the test does not guarantee a passing grade. Your instructor will give you details about the test and its administration. FOR STUDENTS CERTIFIED BY DOS ADAPTIVE PROGRAMS: Students who have been certified by the Office of the Dean of Students-Adaptive Programs as eligible for academic adjustments should go to MATH 909 and request an Information Sheet for this semester. The Information Sheet explains how to proceed this semester to get academic adjustments made in Mathematics courses. (It is not the same as last semester.) This should be done during the first week of classes. Only students who have been certified by the ODOS-Adaptive Programs and who have requested ODOS to send their certification letter to their instructor are eligible for academic adjustments. Students who are currently undergoing an evaluation process to determine whether they are eligible for academic adjustments are encouraged to find out now what procedures they will have to follow when they are certified, by requesting the above mentioned Information Sheet from MATH 909.
