Kimberly Buono Econ 4999 Paper Topic Proposal China’s Three Gorges Dam and its implications Concepts: Critically analyzing the costs and benefits of the Three Gorges Dam from an economic, ecological, historical, and ethical perspective. Major dilemma: Once the project is completed in 2009, what will its implications be? Locally? Nationally? And Globally? Currently, the majority of people affected by the project are those who reside close to the Yangtze River. However, when the project is completed how will it affect China has a nation, the world, and even future generations? Economically? Environmentally? And Historically? Were the project and its policies ethical? Possible Solutions: Unfortunately, the project is almost complete and major environmental, archeological, and ethical problems have already occurred. What are economist’s views of the dam and its future implications? Environmentalist’s views? Archeologist’s views? Sociologist’s views? Through this paper, I would like to analyze the costs of millions of people losing their homes, historical sites being flooded, increased pollution in the Yangtze river, and extreme change to an ecological habitat versus the Chinese being able to cut back their usage of fossil fuels, providing electrical energy to their booming economy, providingtemporary jobs, allowing freight ships to travel inland up the river during several months of the year, and being able to control the devastating flooding of the Yangtze River. After being presented with many perspectives on the issue, the reader will decide for themselves whether the Three Gorges Dam is a benefit or cost to China/the World.
