As well, there will be information pertaining to the geography, history, and culture of Germany and other German-speaking countries. Students will learn to function in various situations using authentic and appropriate language. Expectations: You should plan to spend a minimum of 1 1/2 - 2 hours between class meetings on homework, computer lessons, and listening assignments. Assignments listed in the syllabus will be collected and corrected on a daily basis. Late homework will be corrected and returned, but no credit will be given. Homework may consist of any of the following: 1. Written assignments from the text. 2. Assignments from the SAM (online workbook). 3. Handouts, as needed. 4. Treffpunkt has an interactive Companion Website with various activities, including listening comprehension exercises. These assignments will be communicated via handouts and will be due at the end of each chapter. http://wps.prenhall.com/hss_widmaier_treffpunkt_5/ 5. If needed, we will schedule a class day in the computer lab to introduce use of the website. 6. PLEASE NOTE: Homework will count 15% of your final grade in this course. It is extremely important to complete ALL homework assignments as directed. Attendance: One significant key to success in a course which moves at this pace is regular class attendance. This is a demanding skills course and the entire range of your skills can be evaluated only if you are in class. Therefore, there are no excused absences. Attendance will be accurately documented to ensure fairness in enforcement. Please consult the Department of Modern Languageswebsite for further information regarding the Departmental Attendance Policy: http://www.xavier.edu/modern-languages/documents/department%20attendance%20policy.pdf Students are required to turn off their cell phones and other electronic communication devices during the entire class period! Failure to do so will result in a “O” for the student’s class participation grade for the class during which this requirement was ignored and will thus affect the grade. If you must be absent: Homework for the next class will be posted on the Blackboard message board. Links to handouts will be provided whenever possible. It is the instructor’s expectation that you return from an absence with all work complete. Exams and quizzes: There will be four hour exams. Exams will be returned for discussion on the class meeting following the exam. Written corrections must be made, and will add 2% to your exam grade if turned in 100% correct. Make-up exams will be given only by prior arrangement with the instructor, and are to be taken no later than one class meeting after the regularly scheduled exam. A student may request only one make-up exam per semester. Quizzes are listed in the syllabus, but may also be given at the discretion of the instructor. Quizzes may only be made up if you inform the instructor of your absence BEFORE class time (phone message or e-mail).
