Choate, MCT, Network+ Phone: (517) 796-8657 E-Mail: [email protected] Office: 157 Justin Whiting General Information Prerequisites: CIS 101 Required Text Materials: Network+ 2005 Author: Tamara Dean ISBN: 1-59200-792-9 Required Equipment: Portable USB hard drive (80 GB or bigger) Methods to achieve objectives: discussion, lecture, team problem solving, homework, white paper summaries, quizzes, examinations, and hands-on lab projects. JCC Associate Degree Outcomes (ADO’s): The Board of Trustees of Jackson Community College has determined that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled in the college. These ADO’s are described below in the Course Objectives for CIS 177. Course Objectives: 1. Explain fundamental networking concepts (ADO 7) 2. Troubleshoot simple to moderate networking problems (ADO 7) 3. Work with classmates to build and maintain a computer network (ADO 7) 4. Use networking tools monitor and analyze the status of a network (ADO 7) 5. Use the Internet to research networking information (ADO 7) 6. Review relevant technical networking white papers (ADO 9)Cell Phones and Pagers: You are requested to make sure that any cell phones or pagers you bring to class are turned to the “vibrate” mode or turned off entirely. Project Success Day: Each semester for one day, JCC cancels classes and encourages students to attend Project Success Day. This is a special day of workshops and seminars designed to enhance your ability to learn. You are strongly encouraged to attend. Center for Student Success: Tutors (plus additional services for academic success) can be accessed by calling 796-8415 or by stopping by the Center for Student Success, Walker Hall, Room 123. Students requiring special assistance (including those affected by the Americans with Disabilities Act) should contact the Center for Student Success. This is the first step in acquiring the appropriate accommodation to facilitate your learning. COURSE INFORMATION Office Hours: Tuesday and Thursday 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM Wednesday and Thursday 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM Additional hours by appointment Class Meeting: Monday 12:00 – 3:52 in LISD-TECH 227 Attendance: Attendance is always required for the purpose of interactive learning and group work opportunities. More than two absences will lower your total points. Academic Honesty: Be careful not to plagiarize. Plagiarism is defined in The American Heritage Dictionary as “…using another’s ideas as one’s own…” All assignments related to this class are to be your own work. In the 2008-2009 JCC Catalog, academic honesty is defined as “ …the ethical behavior that includes (students’) producing their own work and not representing others’ work as their own…” The consequences of academic dishonesty include failure for the assignment and/or failure in the course overall. Homework: Homework will be assigned for each chapter and will consist primarily of end of chapter quizzes and supplemental reading.Teamwork: At times you will be expected to work as part of a team during your hands-on labs. The skills and knowledge you develop as a part of this course will help provide the foundation for you to help configure and troubleshoot networking problems as they arise. Hands-on labs: You will create at least two different types of network infrastructures. White Paper Summaries: There will be two white paper summaries. Examinations: There will be a mid-term exam and a final exam. If you have an emergency and will miss an exam date, contact the instructor immediately. You must make up the exam within the next 2 class periods. Participation: Your involvement in class discussions, participation with your team members during the hands-on labs and consistent attendance will be reflected in your participation score.
