IMPORTANT DATESLast day to drop without financial penalty: T, Jan. 10, 2012Systems in Two Variables-- AdditionAddition and Subtraction of PolynomialsComplex FractionsSyllabus and Course PoliciesMAT 1033, Reference number: 680421Professor: Juan J. Prieto-Valdeshttp://faculty.mdc.edu/jprietovCourse prerequisites: MAT 0020, MAT 0024, or equivalent, or appropriate scores on placement test (CPT).Text: Intermediate Algebra by Miller/O'Neill/HydeCourse scope: MAT 1033 is a college prep level algebra course intended to provide you with a foundation inbasic mathematics necessary for studies at the college level. This course will not provide you with creditstoward your AA degree. This is a Web Enhanced Course; some topics could be selected to be taught online using MathZone system. For working with MathZone you will receive a separated page with the instruction; or you can download from my web-page located at http://faculty.mdc.edu/jprietov. Students have two different MathZone-access-code purchasing options: A) Buy a MathZone access code (the code contains the entire e-book, videos, homework, solutions manual, live tutor center, customized study plan, animations, and more assets). B) Buy a new hardcover book package at the school bookstore, which comes with the MML access code. In some weeks, we will have only one face-to-face meeting and one online to re-review selected topics, accomplish the homework or doing online test and/or quiz. Additionally you will have unlimited time for working online: to re-review my lecture online, accomplish your homework and to improve your Math level by practicing additional exercises. Attendance: It is your responsibility to attend each lecture and keep records of assignments and other information delivered during class. Attendance will be recorded for administrative purposes and your instructor reserves the right to count it toward your final grade. Classroom decorum: In order to optimize your learning experience, classroom interruption must be kept to a minimum. Please make every effort to arrive on time and avoid causing an interruption if you need to leaveearly. Please turn your cell phone to a silent mode and avoid using it during class. In an emergency, you may excuse yourself and leave the classroom.Academic dishonesty: Any instance of academic dishonesty will result in a grade of F for the course and can carry an even more severe penalty such as suspension or expulsion. Take pride in your own achievements, an unearned passing grade is not worth the paper it is written on.Grading policy: There will be 5 tests and Final Comprehensive Exam; each worth 100 points. I will not "curve" the grades or drop your lowest grade; however, you can improve your lowest test-grade by doing wellon the final exam. Your lowest test score will be replaced with your final exam grade, in this case, the final exam will count double. Your final grade will be based on the average of five exams and one final. A letter grade will be issued as follows: A > 90 % B: 80-90 % C: 70-80 % D: 60-70 % F < 60 % There are NO MAKEUP TESTS. If you miss a test and, in the opinion of the instructor, the absence is excusable, your final exam will count as two grades. If the absence is not excusable, you will receive a zero on the test missed. Be prepared to document your excuse with a traffic ticket, hospital bill, arrest form, etc. A doctor's note is not acceptable unless it says "(student's name) was unable to attend school on (date of test)." Tardiness is permitted on test days without penalty although you will have less time on the test than everyone else. If you are so late that someone has already turned in their test before you arrive, you will not be allowed to take the test. You may be excused from taking the final exam if you are an average of 70 or above on the 5 exams, in this case your average will be calculated bases on 4 Test. If you take the final exam, even if you are exempt from taking it, then your final grade will be computed by averaging six grades (five tests and the final exam), where the final exam may be substituted for your lowest grade on one of the 4 class tests as well as counting as a final. You may request a grade of I (incomplete) only if you are passing the class and have completed the course past the last date to drop the course with a W.On Campus Support: The College Prep Math Lab, located in room 3319, is available to you as additional support for your academic needs.
