MHR 423 1 Spring 2010The Five-Minute “Selling Pitch” Final PresentationPurpose. The purpose of this final presentation is threefold:- To give you the experience of “pitching” your business concept to an invited investor or two in five minutes (sometimes called an “elevator” pitch)- To force you to focus on why your business opportunity is so great and why someone else should invest in it- To give each of you five other opportunities to hear similar pitches and evaluate them critically from the standpoint of an investorTopics to consider. You will have only five minutes (not a lot of time) to make your pitch. Clearly, you need to work and rework this presentation until it says everything you want it to say, but in a very compressed timeframe (you may find it more difficult than doing a 20-min. presentation). Consider including the following topics:- The business concept and why the timing is right- What you intend to produce (the product, technology, service) and for whom- Why you believe there is a demand for it- Why you think you can compete effectively, or even beat your competitors What is your competitive advantage? How can you protect your margins?- The management team—why you believe this team can actually launch this business successfully- Expected business results, including estimated annual revenues, NIBT, ROI, and breakeven month (use charts here)- Investment deal—the capital you are seeking, use of proceeds, what percentage ofthe company ownership you are willing to give up in exchange, the exit strategy, and any other deal points you wish to include- An ending summary of why the investors should invest in your companyRemember, your purpose is to “sell” the business to a group of investors. You will find that you need to cover most of the above points, though the sequence and relative emphasis you give to each one will be up to you. Include only what is most critical to help you “sell” the business concept to the investors, which means you will have to edit, edit, and edit it down, and then edit it some more. The material from the Gumpert book handed out at the beginning of the course will be useful here. All members of the group should have had a hand in preparing this final presentation and in answering questions at the end; however, your best speaker (or two) should actually deliver this presentation. You do not have to dress up for the final presentation. All groupsMHR 423 2 Spring 2010will present on the same day; each group will have about ten minutes for Q&A. Please give me a copy of your presentation slides on the day (six slides to a page in B&W).Audience. As the audience, I want you to play the role of potential investors to these businesses. If I can, I will invite a couple of real angel investors (or people very savvy about what angel investors look for and how they think) to participate in evaluating the presentations. The higher of the guest and professor evaluations will count in each case. You should ask questions at the end of each presentation (counts towards your participation grade, as does commenting on the three video discussions during the quarter). You will find that the view is very different when you are “on the other side of the fence,”i.e., looking at the business as an investor. This experience is almost as important as writing the business plan, because what you learn by being “on the other side” can only help you write better business plans in the future.Dr. Stan AbrahamMarch 27, 2006Revised March 29,
