expressed over time with in the medium of typography Via a chosen poem or a concrete poetry explore investigate and interpret the meaning of series of the words through the manipulation of type as a verbal message in time space rhythm and movement You are encouraged to use any media which enables you for effective narrative sequences i e any traditional and non traditional medium that could be used to explore expressing the ideas other than the usage of the computer at first flip books super 8 film video digital recording devise stop animation photograph retroscoping photocopying poloroids drawing collaging etc This creative approach takes away the risk of letting the tool dictate the final product Your chosen text should be no fewer than 5 20 words Sound is optional yet essential POEM structure Something that arouses strong emotions because of its beauty CONCRETE POETRY poetry in which the meaning or effect is conveyed partly or wholly by visual means using patterns of words or letters and other typographical devices Learning objectives The art of revealing information communication evoking an emotion in unfolding narrative expressive interpretation catch the spirit of the text smart vs cliche interpreting the meaning of the text through the manipulation of type as a verbal message to free your mind and open up to quantitative explorations and experimentations in search of different ideas Learn how to ask questions to free your mind to explorations investigations and finding solutions What happens to type overtime When typographic elements move how does the rest of the imaginary filmic piece reveal itself When type is in motion it changes shape it slips into a kinetic image What happens when the anatomy of type is no longer fixed on a page How does type and movement produce other possibilities of creating meaning Could words that convey info by themselves and if arranged in certain order communicate complex ideas When type moves it becomes a kinetic visual event How does it continuously recreate a variety of representations How does it play with the boundaries of legibility when adding movement The text message poem that you have chosen will be exploring and manipulating its formal qualities of typography How motion would convey its content due Wk7 T Phase one I the poem and its understanding 1 Select a poem or a piece of writing that partakes the nature of both speech and song that is rhythmical and metaphorical Select one that you find especially inspirational An important goal of the project is to convey the gist behind the text through the design treatment which you will use the content as the driven force for your typographic animation So choose one that arouses strong emotions because of its impact or its meaning 2 As you choose a poem as the content of a sequence begin the project by writing a description of your understanding interpretation of the chosen poem Explore its meaning interpretation structure of the poem Specify many possible ideas typographic choices and how to visually capture its essence of its concept or theme typographically with the dimension of time space and rhythm in concert 3 Once you research the origin of your text thoroughly understand what it s about and brain storm many different visual strategies Write document diagram all the above on as many as 10 x 10 sheet of paper this shows your thinking process it s like showing how you came up with the answer of 5 x 18 9 10 4 Write your interpretations of the poem Type design the text of the poem and the interpretation on 10 x 10 sheet of paper in one to two fonts in different sizes with different weights with w o lines reversed not reversed Bring all to class presentation explore your font options 5 Apply discussed experimentation process to 4 Show 20 50 frames of sequences 10 DSMA 155 Dynamic Typography I NSTRUCTOR Mil k a Br o u k h im MilkaBroukhim artcenter edu Project 4 Continue poetry in motion Capturing the essence of a poem Schedule Wk 8 T work in progress crit lecture Phase 2wo Poem its understanding The poem structure storyboard 1 This time students develop and construct sequences that translates the essence of the poem s story from the abstract typographic environment This is a non narrative approach in developing a storyboard from series of typographic explorations 2 In another approach consider how the poem s skeleton structure and how it would be constructed How it might relate to the form of the text Experiment with how the structure could allude to the meaning or the connections between meanings What is the typography s function in relation to the structure 3 Bring individual proofs showing the above of about at least 50 different explorations 4 Produce a rough edit to finalize your concept storyboard in the class as part of the class crit Based on this day s work I will decide if we are ready for half of the class only coming to Tues or Thurs for a 10 minutes individual crit for next or the following week class meeting Wk 9 T work in progress crit lecture Phase 3ree Poem its understanding structure storyboard animation 1 Bring your developed and finalized storyboards of at least 16 frames quality of the images and the storyboard is expected to be on the professional level The boards may be turned in for work in progress grading 2 Produce and show work in progress an animatic of the entire sequence by sequencing and augmenting static images or any other media that has been incorporated These animation sequences may have translated the essence of the poem s story by assimilating or integrating part or all the abstract typographic environment 3 Consider the usage of the legible typefaces style posture width weight scale before proceeding to the animation 4 Continue in bringing all together Semantic meaning implied suggest or indicate withoutexpressing directly Syntactic form Pragmatic function to your animation to capture the essence of the
