Didi HillNovember 19, 2013Extra CreditTokyo Electric Power Co. in Fukushima, Japan took the first crucial step toward the cleanup from the tsunami and earthquake in 2011. The workers started removing radioactive fuel rods Monday morning. They will have to remove them from four different reactors before moving to the next step. The reactor they decided to start with was actually offline at the time of the disaster so therefore it didn’t melt down like the other three did. Since there were hydrogen explosions though it blew the roof and walls off of Unit 4, it made the structure much weaker. There were 2 other reactors that survived. They decided to start with taking those fuel rods out because even though the workers had “reinforced the building”, the fuel rods were still a safety risk. There are around 1,533 sets of fuel rods that need to be moved. They set up cranes outside of Unit 4 to help with the operation. They believe it will take until the end of 2014 to complete this task. They will start with removing unused rods first then move to the used ones. “TEPCO spokesperson Mayumi Yoshida said the plant has not reported a problem yet”. This is a blessing knowing that they havehad so many different problems in the past cleaning this mess up. The workers are going to have to be extra careful with this operation for it is far more delicate than any other task they had to complete. By now, they should know what and what not to do to cause problems in this. The only major concern they have is having anotherearthquake hit while they are in the cleanup process. This cleanup process is expected to take many decades.TEPCO I believe needs a miracle to fix this problem. I have been following this issue for a while now and things have not been going well in the cleanup for the workers. A little background of the problems includes one being the radioactive water spills. They had so troubleachieving the goal of getting the water out. Most of the problems were stupid mistakes made bythe workers and they had to have someone come in and talk to them and train them on how to deal with the radioactive water.Works CitedAP.
