Wood (GSU Custom Edition, Pearson)•Everyday Writer, Andrea Lunsford (GSU Edition—any year)•The Elements of Style, Strunk and White (available at any college, online, or commercial bookstore—look in the “ Reference” or “Writing” sections)•Any paperback college dictionary that contains pronunciations and brief etymologies (word histories). Check carefully before you buy. •MLA Style reference card (distributed free in class)Required Materials:•Two different sizes of index cards (I recommend 3x5 and 5x8) and storage container•Highlighters (at least 2 different colors)•Plastic envelope, 1” binder, or similar safe place to secure handouts, drafts, copies, etc.•Pocket stapler with staples (you’ll need it!)•Sufficient PantherCard funds for library printouts•Spiral notebook (for class discussion, lecture, and research notes)•Calendar to plan research, important deadlines, dates, etc.•The occasional nominal entry fee/MARTA fare for off-campus trips (bring your GSU ID)Description:Kemp! ! ! ! ENGL 1102! ! ! ! Spring 2009Page 1 v2.0N.B.: This is a special class taught in cooperation with GSU’s Atlanta-Based Learning office. As such, you’ll be eligible for certain perks (like registering with seniors before all the classes are gone next fall, academic/career counseling, off-campus experiences, etc.). I’ll occasionally have paperwork or information to pass along.Prerequisite: C or higher (not C-) in ENGL 1101. This course develops skills beyond the proficiency level of 1101, stressing critical reading and writing and several research methods. Readings will come from a wide variety of texts. A passing grade is C or higher.Course Goals:By the end of the course, students should be able to demonstrate these skills:•Recognize fallacies in context.•Construct sound (logical) arguments using both truth statements (evidence) and validity (complete, correct forms).•Demonstrate appropriate uses of ethos, logos, and pathos.•Demonstrate awareness of various audiences and purposes.•Analyze own and others’ arguments for both strengths and weaknesses.•Write and substantively revise essays through multiple drafts.•Offer and accept constructive criticism of one’s arguments and writing.•Skilled, appropriate use of library databases and stacks as research tools.•Well-rounded awareness of several current issues facing metro Atlanta.Graded Work•10% Annotated bibliography and proposal (10 articles; only 2 from websites; I must approve your sources in advance)•10% In-class writing and participation (1 point for each assignment; this grade will be the total number of assignments you turn in divided by the total we do by semester’s end—no makeups)•5% Class discussion/participation (High Pass/Pass/Fail: I judge your level/quality of contribution throughout the semester as a whole. Frequent non-sequiturs will be graded Fail.)•60% Essays as follows:oSummary/Response (1A); revised as Summary/Analysis/Response (1B)oRhetorical Situation (2A); revised as Analysis of Argument (2B)oPosition Paper (3A); revised as Researched Position Paper (3B)•15% Final Portfolio: Summarize/analyze your progress as a writer this term, using examples from your work and including all three papers submitted and revised for a grade. This will serve as your final exam, so put thought and time into it.•This is the first semester of the new grading scale, which adds A+ (4.3). Spring 2009Page 2 v2.0•Follows assignment sheet and fully develops line of research using appropriate resources (not Wikipedia, random Google results, etc.)Revisions will be graded according to these criteria:•The work demonstrates substantive rewriting (major changes in conceptualization, improved sentence structure, additional relevant information, reconsidered evidence, change in argument, etc.) and/or incorporates the new overall element specified.•The work does not merely change a few token words or punctuation marks or substitute line-editing suggestions for rewriting. •Any weak or incorrect citations have been integrated naturally into the body of the paper in such a way as to satisfy MLA style and to avoid plagiarism (this often requires rewriting substantial passages).PerformanceIn-class performance will be graded according to these criteria:•To what extent did the work fulfill the criteria?•Was a group contribution really a slacker performance (e.g., “She researched and wrote it and I typed it into a web template”)?Plagiarism/Cheating Any plagiarized work, whether done intentionally or accidentally, will earn a grade of 0 (F) A second incident of plagiarism, for whatever reason, or any first incident of cheating, will result in a WF for the course, which will have a substantial negative impact on the offender’s overall GPA/HOPE scholarship/sports eligibility, etc. It also may lead to university disciplinary hearings.See http://www2.gsu.edu/~wwwdos/codeofconduct_conpol.html for detailed GSU policies on plagiarism and cheating.
