Rubric for Projects*Project Due Date – Wednesday, June 2th* Groups of 2 – 4 to perform mini-experiment. Write-ups should be done on an individual basis and be no more than 5 pages long, including graphs and tables* Total Points = 100(1) Get project approved by me. You need to briefly describe the experiment, what you plan to do (including the statistical test), and who is in your group. (5 pts)(2) Written portion of the project – Exposition (that’s writing style and general grammatical issues). (5 pts)A. Introduce your project. In paragraph format set your project up. Explain things like why your project is interesting. Why is it important to do; what will it add to science/ knowledge/ your own information bank. In research we need to give provide a rationale for performing an experiment. Get us excited about reading your project in this opener. For ideas on how to set up your intro and make it interesting read the preview sections in Chapters 6, 8, 9, 10, or 11. Theyall do a good job. This is where you can be creative. (10 pts)State your hypothesis in words (not the null and alternative, yet). What do you predict and why do you predict it (.e.g. I predict that women on an average Saturday afternoon will spend more money in the mall than men). (10 pts)B. Write out in paragraph format the steps you would take to do the inferential process. Try to include language like that you would read in a journal article (APA format). For more information on this review the IN THE LITERATURE sections of the relevant chapters (we have also gone over this in class). (1) State the hypotheses; both null and alternative. You can choose whether or not you want your hypothesis to be directional. (10 pts)(2) Set your criterion level; it must be at least alpha of less than .05 (or p<.05). Explain why you decided on a particular level. Include information about what it means to set that level (e.g. information about power, your n,wanting to prevent the likelihood of a Type I or Type II error). (10 pts)(3) Report descriptive statistics of your choice (for most of you this will be M and SD). How do they give us a picture of your data before we even know about the inferential statistics? (5 pts)Use a graph or table (or both) of your choice. Make sure your graph truly illustrates your data, not just a mock up. Use excel, another graphical program of your choice or carefully and neatly graph by hand. (5 pts)(4) Compute your test statistic. Show the formula, the data you plugged in, etc. (10 pts) You need to justify why you chose that particular test statistic. (5 pts) For instance, maybe you chose the z-statistic becauseyou had access to the population standard deviation. Or maybe you chose the t-statistic because you didn’t have access to the population standard deviation. Perhaps your experiment was a repeated-measures design instead of an independent measures design. Also, include what assumptions you needed to meet to perform your test statistic. Did you meet those assumptions? If you don’t have access to one particular assumption you can pretend you met the assumption, I just want you to note what things are important (e.g. random sampling, independent observations, normal distribution, homogeneity of variance (could do F-max)). (5 pts) (5) Make a decision about your hypothesis. Did your experiments show differences related to chance or did your treatment show a difference (e.g. Women spend significantly more money in the mall than men, t (25) = 3.14, p < .05.)? (10 pts)C. Conclusions: Wrap up. What do your results mean? What implications do your findings have? Give us a nice story about your experiment. (10 pts)Ideas for projects and examples of projects that have been done in the past:**Give your friends a list of words...wait 45 mins. and ask them to answer as many as possible. Next, give your friends a new set of words (try to equate the two sets) ask them to drink 2 alcoholic beverages within 45 mins. and test again (BE SAFE).**Does your favorite basketball team score more points on average when playingat home than when playing away?**On an a Sat. do women in the mall tend to spend more money than men?** Are the GPAs of individuals studying in the library bigger than the GPAs of those studying in a coffee shop?** Are the IQs or SATs scores of students studying in the library greater than the population average?** Do people in my family live longer than average?** Time your friends in an obstacle course before and after staying up all night or before and after a couple of drinks (BE
