statistics At the end of this course students should be able to 1 Understand basic concepts that underlie descriptive and inferential statistics 2 Perform some basic statistical analyses using a calculator 3 Apply basic concepts and procedures to the design analysis and interpretation of psychological research data Requirements Grading Etc Requirements 1 You are required to complete all readings BEFORE the lectures for which they are assigned 2 There will be 9 required homework assignments Homework is usually due by the end of Friday s lecture see due dates below There will be a box for homework in front of the room Homework not handed in on time will be given a zero Homework will consist of two parts Multiple choice questions to be answered on line and a set of problems to work from the textbook Both parts of the homework must be completed in order to receive credit Exam questions will be similar in format and content to the homework questions 3 There will be 3 required exams two midterms and one final The final will be given during the regularly scheduled exam time for this class Thursday December 15 11 30 2 30 All exams may contain both multiple choice and free response questions Exam questions will cover material presented both in the textbook and in lectures The best way to study for exams is to attend class to review the learning goals posted on the class website and the homework questions and to attend the exam review sessions Grading Your grade in this class will be based on homework and three exams Each homework assignment will be graded on pass fail basis and together will constitute 10 of your final grade 1 for each passed homework plus 1 bonus The first Midterm Exam will count for 20 of your final grade the second 30 and the Final Exam will count for 40 of your grade Although exams will emphasize recent materials statistics is naturally cumulative so anything we ve studied could be on an exam The best guide to what s important is the list of learning goals that are posted on the course website Use the learning goals to guide your study Psych 100A Page 1 Final grades will be assigned as follows 90 A 85 B 80 B 75 C 70 C 60 D 60 F Getting Help and Exam Review Sessions Both the professor and the teaching assistant want to help you succeed in this class If you have questions raise them in class and or go to office hours and ask the instructors The teaching assistant John Swartwood will be offering additional help as follows 1 The extra class each Friday 1 1 50 will be devoted to questions and answers Consider it like an additional group office hour It s an especially good time to bring in homework questions you were unsure about and ask John to explain them 2 John will also hold three three hour review sessions during the quarter one before each of the three exams These review sessions will be VERY USEFUL and we urge you to attend Readings and Other Materials All reading assignments are from the textbook unless otherwise specified Kiess H O 2002 Statistical concepts for the behavioral statistics third edition Boston CA Allyn and Bacon A simple calculator is bundled with the textbook This is the ONLY calculator that will be allowed during exams unless otherwise approved by the instructor Important Notes about Reading Kiess Kiess contains many formulas and derivations of formulas Do your best to read these for it will help you understand the concepts However the only formulas you are required to remember are those listed on the formula sheet on the website You can skip all sections in Kiess with the words Computational Formula in the heading Website The class website for this class will contain a number of useful resources These include 9 A list of learning goals for each topic in the
