Health Human Performance and Sport PED 305 551 Fall 2004 Instructor Tammy Evetovich Ph D Office Rice 11B Phone 375 7463 Final Email taeveto1 wsc edu http academic wsc edu faculty taeveto1 Prerequisite courses PED 105 205 Course description A study of the major physiological systems in their response to exercise for Physical Education K 12 K 6 7 12 and Wellness majors and students in these areas also taking the Coaching minor or endorsement Teacher Endorsement Objectives Met Include motor skills affective behavior adapted physical education scientific foundations athletic injuries growth and development training conditioning nutrition psychology of coaching coaching theories and methods and risk management Text Housh Housh and deVries 2003 Applied Exercise and Sport Physiology Holcomb and Hathaway Publishers Exams will cover material covered in lecture The text is for reference and clarification of lecture topics There will be material presented that may not be in the text so attendance is imperative In addition you will be required to visit my web pages see address above to view and receive more course materials Exams 400 points total There will be four exams including the final during the semester each worth 100 points While the second third and fourth exams are not expressly comprehensive it is assumed that the student has a firm understanding of all material previously presented in the course Format of these exams will be T F short answer fill in the blank matching and or multiple choice Exam dates will be announced in class at least one week prior Make up Exams Make up exams may be arranged only if sufficient mitigating circumstances exist and will be given at the time of the final exam It is the student s responsibility to contact the professor on or before the exam date Failure to do so may result in a zero for the missed exam The final exam will be given at the scheduled time do not ask to take the final early Quizzes In Class Assignments Instructor reserves the right to give quizzes in class assignments without prior notice The number of quizzes that will be administered throughout the semester is at the discretion of the instructor In addition there may be in class assignments projects that cannot be made up if the student misses class Attendance Attendance and promptness is expected While it is recognized that certain unforeseen events may prevent you from attending a certain class due to the lecture nature of this class it is essential that you attend and participate It will be necessary for you to perform bouts of exercise as part of the laboratory experiences Lack of participation will be reflected in final grades for laboratory sessions Laboratories 125 points The following five labs will be scheduled throughout the semester date to be announced If I find that additional laboratories may be beneficial to help you to better understand lecture material we may add more labs There will be a typed lab report required for each lab worth 25 points each Reports will be typed and handed in on the assigned date usually 1 week after the lab failure to do so will result in a 5 point penalty for each day 5pts day that the report is late including weekends and holidays All reports should be the original work of the student Copying of laboratory materials and reports is considered to be cheating and will result in an F for the lab for all students involved The number of points possible for each lab will vary If the student is not in attendance for the lab it cannot be made up 1 2 3 4 5 Anaerobic Assessments Aerobic Assessments Strength Endurance Assessments Body Composition Measurements Heart Rate Blood Pressure Lab Grades Exams 4 Labs 5 Quizzes Total Points Grading Scale A AB B BC 400 points 125 points at least of points to be determined 525 quizzes 93 5 100 89 5 93 4 85 5 89 4 82 5 85 4 79 5 82 4 75 5 79 4 C CD D DF 72 5 75 4 69 5 72 4 65 6 69 4 62 5 65 4 59 5 62 4 Below 59 5 Note Students Enrolled in PED 551 will also be required to complete a research paper or project decided upon by the student worth 100 points These students should consult with me with regard to their topic In addition you may be asked to provide lectures 25 points each lecture Dishonesty I do not and will not put up with cheating of any kind If I have sufficient proof you will receive an F on the exam quiz lab or possibly an F in the course While it is quite possible that I will not be able to prove that you are cheating if I suspect dishonesty you will not receive a letter of recommendation in the future I will discuss my suspicions with other professors and I will be watching you constantly It is not worth it do not do it
