IV. Zip disk (Team will lose 15 points if not turned in)V. Individual Quiz (worth 50 points)VI. PlagiarismGuidelines for Math 174 ProjectsPCC - Northwest, Spring 2004I. Preliminary report (worth 20 points)You must meet as a team and prepare a PowerPoint presentation explaining who you are and what problem you will solve. You must have, understand, and use your data. Be able to answer questions on what you have to do; not how you will do it. Additionally, as a test of your understanding of the problem, you must agree on a provisionalsolution. This solution does not, and should not use any of the mathematical tools you will learn. It should be basedon common sense or what you as reasonable people with some instinct for business might do if a decision had to be made immediately.II. Final oral presentation (worth 70 points)a. This represents your team’s presentation to the most senior official in the outfit which employs you. It should be complete and have spreadsheet links to explain fully what you did. All team members must be present and share equal speaking responsibilities, in content and time. To preclude problems, 7 to 10 days before the final presentation is due the entire team must make an appointment with me to discuss progress. You should bring an outline of your final paper, your spreadsheet solution as far as it is done, and be able to discuss problems you are having. If this is not done, the penalty will be the loss of the points for the preliminary presentation. Think of this as being a progress report to an intermediate superior before you go see the boss. You should minimize the size of your file by saving it with a different filename each time, and by using “paste special” to insert pieces of Excel files.b. To do what is required above, you will have to meet often. If you are a “do-it-all-alone” type, you will wind up being a martyr, and your grade will suffer when the other members of your team don’t know anything. If a team has three sorority members and one male, three a.m. in the sorority house is probably not a good time or place to meet. A good place to meet is the Information Commons Room or the Math Tutoring Room - if you get stuck, you may be able to find some help. There will be NO split presentations caused by team members not working together. c. If one member of an otherwise functioning team refuses to co-operate, you are justified in leaving that person’s name off the final report. However, this should be an absolute last resort, and you should be able to justify it with e-mail invitations to meet, dates and times of phone calls, et cetera. In the real world this would be cause for being fired, and the rest of the team would get a black eye from not being able to organize themselves. Best not to have it happen. If it does, come and see me first. I can and will administratively drop a student who does not co-operate with the structure and requirements of the course up until the last drop date. After that, the problem is yours.III. Written report (worth 60 points)This, usually, is the only thing your superior takes with him after the briefing. It therefore should be a complete description of what you did and how you did it. You must answer all the questions assigned in the project and give detailed explanations of the mathematics and the Excel solution methods. It should be written in college level English, i.e., use complete sentences, proper grammar and correct spelling. It should be somewhat formal; for examples, look at annual reports from business firms. I don’t demand pictures, but this should give you an idea of what is expected. Note that this is a report and not the script for your presentation. Since this is part of a college course, specifically a report of an academic project, equations are appropriate (use equation editor) as well as short excerpts from your spreadsheet. The excerpts and equations should be well documented as to what they are, what they mean, and why they are important. Do not insert random snippets of Excel without explaining why the head of your company should waste his time looking at them. Number your pages, as you would for any other academic paper, and double space. A final report consisting of several pages of computer printout and a reference to a PowerPoint presentation will be graded a failure. This should represent your best academic and business work. Think of it as an attachment to a letter of recommendation from me to an employer in support of your application fora job you really, really want. 1IV. Zip disk (Team will lose 15 points if not turned in)A. All projects are to be done with Excel spreadsheets. Yours must be turned in on a zip disk on the day your final report is due, and I will check how you solved your problem. Your first worksheet should be an index, which tells me where to find the corresponding items. Make sure that the spreadsheet is annotated, like the examples in the PowerPoint text. This ensures that I can follow your work. If I cannot find it, I will assume it is notthere. Always check a few cells of each calculation with a hand-held calculator to ensure you have not done something in error. Recheck spelling and run simulations several times to ensure that the numbers reasonably agree. If information can be generated by Excel in two different ways (by table or by solver, for example) the two ways should give consistent answers. You can always come see me in office hours, or make an appointment, to have me look at your work. If your spreadsheet does not meet the requirements stated here, you will lose points from your overall project score.B. The two PowerPoint presentations and the written report are to be included on the zip disk which contains the Excel worksheet solution. If a handout is prepared for the class, it should be there as well.C. Your zip disk should be 100 MB not 250 MB. If you turn in a disk that is 250 MB, my computer will not be able to read it, and I will have to return your disk to you. Additionally, there should be nothing on the zip disk but the work associated with the project; I am not interested in your social correspondence or your hobbies. Should I get a disk with inappropriate material on it, I will return it so that the material can be removed. If I must return your disk to you for any reason, your overall project grade will be negatively affected. Label the zip disk withyour team and section
