This can be purchased from the JCC bookstore. It is also available online from the publisher at www.coursecompass.com (just click on 'Register' and you will be given the option to purchase the course code). If you already own My Math Lab from a previous course, you can simply log in as usual, and then select "register for a new course". You will be charged a registration fee for the new course, but it may be less expensive than purchasing the product new again. - A graphing calculator. If you already own one that you know how to use, that is fine. If you are making a new purchase, I recommend the TI-83 plus or TI-84 plus. I have support documents to help you learn to use these models, and I am also familiar with them and can answer your questions about them. The following are optional items: - The textbook, Intermediate Algebra, 3rd edition, by Jay Lehmann. Your My Math Lab access code gives you access to the entire textbook online. You only need to purchase the textbook if you want to have a hard copy to read. The JCC bookstore carries a package that includes the textbook and My Math Lab bundled together for a reduced price. - The student solutions manual to accompany the textbook. Your homework will be done in My Math Lab, which also can show you worked out solutions to problems upon request. The student solutions manual displays solutions to the textbook's problems, which are not course assignments, but could be done optionally if you so choose.4 Course Requirements Course Requirements Your final grade for the course will be determined by your performance in four categories. They are: - Homework: All homework is submitted through My Math Lab. o You will be able to practice and learn by  Reading each section in your textbook.  Watching the instructional videos I have created (links in the weekly assignments in JetNet)  Using the resources in My Math Lab, such as worked examples, step-by-step solutions to problems, and video clips for each section in your textbook and for some sample problems. o You will receive a homework grade by  Doing the homework problems listed in My Math Lab. You will receive immediate feedback when you do homework. My Math Lab will grade it, and allow you to view correct solutions if you miss a problem.  You may choose to redo homework at your discretion. This means that if you are not satisfied with your learning and/or your grade on homework, you may ask My Math Lab for new problems to complete. Your homework grade will be updated to reflect your performance on the new problems. You are welcome to do homework as many times as you like until you are satisfied that you understand the material and are comfortable with your grade.  I will not put a homework grade into your course gradebook until the very end of the semester, so any and all work you do will be reflected in your final homework grade.  IMPORTANT: I strongly suggest that you keep a homework notebook, in which you work each homework problem in a neat and organized way. This notebook will be valuable to you when you go to study for chapter quizzes and for course exams. It is also excellent practice for the pencil-and-paper course exams. - Chapter Quizzes: All Chapter Quizzes will be submitted through My Math Lab. o Complete and submit the “Chapter Quiz” for each chapter after you have done all of the homework for that chapter. o Unlike homework, you will have only two chances to do each chapter quiz. For this reason, you will want to study and prepare for the chapter quizzes just as you might do for a test or quiz in a traditional class. If you aredissatisfied with your grade on your first attempt at the quiz, you have one additional attempt to improve your grade. There is no risk involved; only the better of the two grades will be counted. o All quizzes are open-book, so you may reference your textbook and homework notebook. - Participation: o There will be one Discussion Forum that you will need to complete, plus two papers to write, all of which will be submitted in JetNet. The first discussion forum is a self-introduction. The two papers are mathematical modeling assignments. In each paper, you will be asked to apply what we have been studying to your own life (career, hobbies, interests). Specific instructions will be posted for each assignment well in advance of the due date. o You will also receive participation points for completing the scavenger hunt quiz in JetNet. - Course Exams: These are closed book, pencil-and-paper exams, and must be proctored. o You will be able to prepare for these exams by using the review sheets I will post, including audio files that you can use to watch and listen to me work out the review problems. o You can take these exams on JCC’s campus by using the testing
