Definition of Personality
-> Mostly intuitive -> important to recognize: set of psychological traits and mechanisms
3 levels of personality
1) Human Nature 2) Individual and Group Differences 3) Individual Uniqueness
1) Human Nature
the fact we are all humans! eg. ability to empathize. importance of relationships: fundamental to human species. one way to define personality => evolutionary perspective eg. chimps: dominance is important
How we are like some others
eg. men higher rates of aggression than women people exist on a continumm
introversion vs extraversion
some are like this some are not
How we are like no others
uniqueness: we really are all different from everyone else -> David doesn't like banana stickers, lives on bowen -> experiences are all different!
Prison experiements?
what is it due to? human nature, individual differences, unique case? situation vs. person debate?
Person x Situation
a persons behaviour is never completely explained by inner qualities OR outside experience. must be some combination
