If group forms for social reasons the more cohesive, the better. The more cohesive a group is the more members are likely to stay in the group. Doing well on a task causes a group to become more cohesive. If task requires close corporation between members then cohesiveness causes the group to perform well – cohesiveness gets in the way it maintaining good members relations becomes more important than solutions
