Schramm 1 Kristen Schramm ENG 3364 MWF 11 11 50 Professor Satz March 31 2014 A Measurement of Love Picture books have and still are a great way for parents to spend quality time with their children as well as to offer a positive message for their child What if not everyone has the same idea of what comes across as a positive message This subjectivity has made it difficult for parents to decide on what books will convey the best message to their child In addition parents must worry about not only the message the actual words of a book give but the message the illustrations offer as a whole Out of all the books there are to choose from today I feel that Guess How Much I Love You written by Sam McBratney and illustrated by Anita Jeram has an overall message that is positive for children of all ages and I would recommend it to anyone looking for picture books to actively read with their kids This book was also an important piece to my childhood and I genuinely feel it added to bond that me and my mother held and still hold Guess How Much I Love You is a heartwarming story whose overt message is the continuity of familial love more specifically from a parent The story begins with Little Nutbrown Hare asking Big Nutbrown Hare guess how much I love you and soon turns into a back and forth comparison using distances of who loves one more than the other In the end the father figure Big Nutbrown Hare puts Little Nutbrown Hare to bed believing that his Schramm 2 distance of I love you right up to the moon was the final say in their friendly dispute The last line of the book has Big Nutbrown Hare whispering I love you right up to the moon and back I feel that this examples the overall idea of the book in an easy to understand and noncontroversial way it is telling a child that no matter how much they love their parent their parent will love them even more This idea of parental love is also well established in the many beautiful illustrations in the book The last few pages of
