Kierra Quinn Critical response 2 In the reading I won t learn from you Herbert Kohl begins by meeting someone who does not want to learn English to preserve his language with his children He then moves on to stating how when discussed with friends they turned what had been cultural into a failure to learn He then argues that not learning is frequently misguided for a failure of learning or the inability to Later on in the reading Kohl mentions that unlearning racist and sexist language patterns plays a role in the struggle against racism and sexism He then continues to state that messy habits of reference will lead to avoidance of dealing with social racial and gender matters that need to be resolved in order to claim democracy He then begins to wrap up by stating for many students the only sane alternative to not learning is the acknowledgement and direct confrontation of oppression social sexual and economic both in school and in society kohl continues to explain that Education that is built on acceptance of the hard truth about our society today and can break through not learning and can bring all of the teachers and students together One part of the text really interested me was when the woman was writing an article on students and what they planned to do in their futures and the conversation between her and victor and Paul and how they can portray kohl s ideas First when Paul begins by saying that this education system is very confusing and that no one is there to explain it to them which is definitely true for students in today s education system whose cultural backgrounds are not from here they are just thrown into this system and are expected to know how to do everything He also says that if you don t do it then you mess up your future I think that this happens with many kids in todays education system when they are thrown into it and don t understand how to do it then they give up and then after school they just move on with bad decisions or find something
