March 11th 2014 The Road Less Traveled I am a biology major and a Carson in my filed of interest would be Charles Darwin Darwin was a man way ahead of his time He grew up in 19th century England and was apart of the Anglican Church His parents majorly controlled Darwin s life pushing him into medical school to become a doctor like his father After learning this wasn t the career choice for him Darwin decided to study natural history This led him on many voyages to learn about different species and eventually sparked his theory for evolution Rachel Carson author of Silent Spring writes in the last chapter of her novel We stand now where two roads diverge But unlike the roads in Robert Frost s familiar poem they are not equally fair The road we have long been traveling is deceptively easy a smooth superhighway on which we progress with great speed but at its end lies disaster The other fork of the road the one less traveled by offers our last our only chance to reach a destination that assures the preservation of the earth Carson 277 This connects to Darwin because in his time the common idea was this idea of designfulness an example of the road commonly travelled Like Carson says the road commonly traveled ends in disaster it s the wrong way of thinking A common idea in 19th century England designfulness was that all organisms were designed specifically by god This idea is incorrect it is illogical Darwin chooses to take the road less traveled the road of evolution Michon 2015 It took a lot of personal will to think differently and even more publicize your different opinions He published his theory of evolution a few years after returning from his voyage His research has changed the field of Biology it has opened up so many new questions and opportunities to learn so much more about the world around us Charles Darwin s theory of evolution proposed that all organisms have a common ancestor He believed differently than his society he didn t think god had created all these perfect organisms He believed that they all evolved and changed to best fit their environment Like Carson he did back up his work with extensive amounts of research so he could give the public reliable information to learn from His theory of evolution was greatly criticized when it was first publicized As time went on people became more and more accepting of it He shared some similar experiences with Carson They both pointed out obvious information to their society the theory of evolution and the danger of pesticides Both of these ideas were true but Carson and Darwin had to put in a lot of effort to bring light to these ideas in their societies eyes I hope that there will be many more Carsons to come in this world I feel that their ability to make a difference in this world is extensive Rachel Carson faced many issues with pesticide companies and other legal problems Darwin was challenged in his endeavors to enlighten the world on new scientific research I think it takes a very strong and persistent person to do the things these people have done I truly look up to Rachel Carson as a role model She is an incredibly strong and persistent person who will fight for what she thinks is right and to share her thoughts and opinions with the world around her Bibliography Carson Rachel Silent Spring Boston Houghton Mifflin 1962 Print Charles Dawrin Bio com A E Networks Television Web 10 Mar 2015 Rachel Carson s Biography The Life and Legacy of Rachel Carson Web 10 Mar 2015 Scott Michon Rocky Road Charles Darwin Rocky Road Charles Darwin Web 10 Mar 2015
