This course satisfies the Legislative requirements for teacher certification.COURSE PURPOSE: : To acquaint students with the specifics of the development of the Texas and U.S. Constitutions and the party systems of the nation and state. The primary goal is to promote critical thinking in understanding of the operation of the US and Texas governments. Fundamentally, the course promotes general understanding of a body of knowledge any literate person should possess about the government of his or her own country.COURSE REQUIREMENTS: : To maximize a student's potential to complete this course, he/she should attend all class meetings, complete all homework assignments and examinations in a timely manner, and complete all other projects or papers as assigned in the instructor's specific instructions.COURSE EVALUATION: : See the instructor's course information sheet for specific items used in evaluating student performance.ATTENDANCE POLICY: : Whenever absences become excessive and in the instructor's opinion, minimum course objectives cannot be met due to absences, the student will be withdrawn from the course. Each instructor will have additional information about attendance on his/her course information sheet.STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: : Students who have completed this course will be expected to: *Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of major perspectives in American government. * Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the development of the US Constitution and of the Texas Constitution. *Understand the nature of government as a fundamental subject in the study of humanity. *Evaluate the diversity of interpretations of the development of American government and the quality of evidence for that interpretation. *Tolerate ambiguity in explanations of the development of American government and realize that casual explanations will often be complex and tentative. * Apply analytical thought to current events, seeing common threads of development of American government over time. A detailed explanation of each course component will follow.Course Grade Your grade is determined by the number of points you earn on the four parts of the course: Discussion Postings, Chapter Exams, Module Exams, and the Final Exam. 3195-3550=A; 2840-3194=B; 2485-2839=C; 2130-2484=D; Less than 2130=F.Discussions Postings During the time allotted for each module you will make four bulletin discussion postings (You will find discussions under Course Tools). Two of your postings for each module will be your reaction to two different articles related to U.S. or Texas government that you read on the New York Times Web site (found on the Home Page). Your posting should begin with the title of the article and date you read it. Write a paragraph very briefly telling about the contents of the article and then an extensive reaction (your thoughts about the topic). Later during the time allotted for the learning module, read postings by other students/or your professor and then make a third and fourth posting agreeing or disagreeing with another student. Please write a long paragraph explaining why you agree or disagree. At lease once in the semester, you will be given a critical writing assignment associated with this portion of the course. For all postings grammar and spelling will be considered for your grade. You must make four postings during the time allotted for the module and follow the above instructions to receive 50 points for each posting (for a total of 200 points for each module).
