Dehler Office: GLG Room 201 Phone: (435)-797-0764 Email: [email protected] (soon to be [email protected]) Office hours: Mondays/Wednesdays 2:30-3:30 pm, or by appointment Teaching assistants: Dan Rybczynski (office GLG01) and Bronson Barton (office GLG212) Undergraduate teaching fellows: Lucas Garcia, Scott Sallay, Alan Gunnell Class meets: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 1:30-2:20 pm in Room 105 unless otherwise noted. There will be a 3-day weekend field trip to Capitol Reef National Park. You must also be enrolled in one of the three accompanying lab classes, either Wednesday or Thursday 3:30-5:20 pm, or Friday, 2:30-4:20 am in Room 102. Labs begin the second week of the semester. Class webpage: “Earth Through Time” web page link (web address: www.usu.edu/geo/dehler) Textbook: -- “Historical Geology” by Reed Wicander and James Monroe, Fifth Addition, 2006 -- There is no required textbook for the lab; handouts will be given regularly. There are required materials: hand lens, field notebook, and colored pencils Goals of this class: The main goal of this class is to have FUN learning about the history of the Earth. We will explore the scientific methods used to interpret the Earth’s past. We will gain an understanding of the physical, biological, and chemical events that have occurred throughout Earth history, and how and when these events contributed to the construction of the evolving Earth. This will all be done within a framework of lectures, exams, and hands-on experience in the lab and in the field where an atmosphere of discussions and critical thinking will be greatly encouraged. Grading: There will be 3 exams (all pseudo-comprehensive), the weekly lab, a weekend field trip, quizzes, and write-ups. Exams: 45% you can take an exam early, but you cannot take an exam late. Quizzes, write-ups, and class participation: 15% Lab: 25% --you can make up one lab, but it will still be due on original due date Field trip: 15%--if you cannot come on the field trip, you are required to take a final exam Notice to students with disabilities: If you have a disability that will likely require some accommodation by the instructor, you must contact the instructor and document the disability through the Disability Resource Center, preferably during the first week of the course. Any requests for special considerations relating to attendance, teaching methods, taking examinations, etc. must be discussed with and approved by the instructor.
