You are expected to have completed the prerequisites for this course, and failure to do so may impair yourchances for success in this class. You are encouraged to consult with the instructor promptly if you have not completed theprerequisites.Text: Ethics and Technology: E thical Issues in an Age of Information and Communication Technology by Herman T. Tavani,second edition.Grading:• 30% exams (two in-class exam scheduled for Thursday September 20 and Thursday October 25).• 20% final exam ( scheduled for Thursday December 6, 2:00 – 4:30).• 10% quizzes• 10% participation, including attendance• 10% presentation• 20% papersCourse Objectives1. Make students aware of the ethical codes of the various professional organizations and alternative viewpoints.2. Stimulate critical discussion of the codes and the principles behind them.3. Give the students a comparative overview of about si x bases for ethical decision making, both classical and alternative.4. Present the rudiments of legal language as applied to computer workers, basic legal obligations and responsibilities, and showhow to obtain reliable information using Internet resources.5. Instill in students the notion of their accountability to their profession as well as to society at large.Course Contents: This course will cover topics in computer ethics.• Introduction to cyberethics• Ethical concepts and theories• Critical thinking and logical arguments• Professional ethics• Codes of conduct• Moral responsibilities• Privacy and cyberspace• Security and cyberspace• Cybercrime• Intellectual Property• So ci al Issues• Other topics as time permitsAcademic Honesty: All work s ubmitted for a grade is expected to be your own. As a guideline, you may talk together,but do not write together. Projects may be subject to review through automated systems such as Turnitin or Moss. Studentsin this class are expected to adhere to the Texas State University Honor Code, a link to which is on my website.Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance is expected. Students are expected to have completed the assigned reading.Class discussion of the assigned readings will be a major part of the course and a part of the course grade. Disruptive latearrivals and other uncivil behavior will not b e tolerated.Late Work: No late work will be acc epted without prior approval of the instructor, including papers and exams. Examsand quizzes missed without prior approval will receive a grade of zero. No make-up exams, quizzes or assignments will beoffered.Texas State Email Account: I expect you to have and use a Te xas State Email address.Academic Policies: See the Student Handbook for more information about Texas State Academic Policies includingprobation, s uspension, academic honesty, dropping a class, incompletes, grade changes, and withdrawl.Special Needs: Students with special needs as documented by the Office of Disability Services should identify themselvesat the beginning of the semester.Drop Policy: All drops are done through Catsweb.
