Watch the video for 5minutes and take ad lib data (see handout) on the monkeys you see. Now watch the same video and record focal scan data on one of the monkeys in 30 second intervals. Here are some descriptions that may help you: groom self, groom other, receive grooming, visual scan, move, forage, eat, scratch, etc. Use any other words you feel will best describe the activities.Compare your two data sets. Which do think is a more accurate way of collecting data? In what situation would you need to use ad lib data? Station 2: Social decision makingWhat is going on in this picture (A)? _______________________Pretend you are an adult male monkey. Why would you spend time doing this to:a) an infant ____________________________b) an adult female ____________________________c) another adult male _____________________________The marmosets in picture B are participating in food sharing. Pretend you are an adult female monkey. Why would you spend time doing this to:a) an infant _____________________________________b) another adult female _____________________________________c) an adult male _____________________________________Station 3: Group LivingName 3 reasons a primate would want to live in a group. 1.2.3.Name 3 reasons a primate would NOT want to live in a group.1.2.3.Station 4: Social SystemsName the types of social systems pictured here:A.B.C.D.E.Station 5: EcologyLook at the three different habitats pictured. Briefly describe what kind of social organization you would expect to see in each location and why. A.B.C. Station 6: Field ResearchYou have received a grant to study the primates pictured here. What is the ONE question you want to answer about them? What sampling method will you use? Which animals in the group will you study? What other variables will you want to look at? (Use complete sentences, attach another sheet if necessary)Homework:1. Ape (p.7-8 in the reader)Are the apes a monophyletic group?Which ape is in the subfamily Ponginae?2. The Secret Lives of Squirrel Monkeys (p. 9-10 in the reader)What is the “ecological model” of squirrel monkey social behavior? Which populations of squirrel monkeys follow the ecological model? 3. Using whatever research materials you have access to answer the following questions:Name 1 primate species (using the scientific name, i.e., genus and species) with one-malesocial organization:Name 1 primate species (using the scientific name) that is monogamous:Name 1 primate species (using the scientific name) that lives in a multi-male group:extra credit: 2 genera that live in a fission-fusion society:useful
