CED 152 Spring 2009 Short Writing Assignment #1: CD Issue Due January 21, 2009, 7AM, ANGEL DROP BOX BE SURE TO READ ALL ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS A community leader is always on the lookout, finding, understanding, and describing issues and problems within their community. Community developers, planners, and other leaders are often asked by their public about these issues, and there is nothing worse than being caught flatfooted about a big community issue! While we all wish we could tell the future, understanding the signs of emerging issues and where to find information about them is critical to effectively managing them. Sometimes, there is so much information available, it can be difficult to determine what is correct or totally incorrect (most of the time the truth is somewhere in between!!!). This assignment gives you the opportunity to seek out an issue, find information on it, critique that information, and report your findings. Your assignment is to identify an issue interesting to you which you think is important and related to community development. Find one web or print resource describing the issue and provide the full citation for the resource. It is fine to use information from current news reports, National Public Radio, national magazines (e.g., National Geographic, Natural History), or national or local newspapers for this assignment. Write a 1 to 2 page summary of this issue and article. Write a description and explanation of the issue, how the issue relates to community development, why the issue is of interest to you and why it is important in our lives. Then briefly describe the nature of the article/resource (is it research-based, opinion-based, do you think the source has a particular bias, and the reliability of the source). Please save the document as a .docx, .doc, or .rtf file. Use the following format to name the file (WeigleSWA1). Make sure your name and the assignment number are included in your response. Submit the SWA to the SWA#1 Drop Box by 7 am January 21st. Be prepared to talk about your issue and its relation to community development in class (Wednesday, January 21). Class discussion will focus on these issues and how they relate to community development and sustainability. We will utilize these issues as the basis for class examples and discussion throughout the semester. Links for help on citation and referencing are available on the ANGEL website. Contact Michael or Jason if you have questions or problems. As a reminder, each short writing assignment is worth 90 points. Point allocations for this assignment are shown on the back.Grading Elements Grade Description Explanation of the issue (30 pts) Why the issue is of interest to you and why it is important in our lives (10 pts) How the issue relates to community development (10 pts) The citation, description, and evaluation of the identified resource (20 pts) Organization, grammar and readability (20 pts) Excellent • Describe the key facets of the issue • Describe where the issue takes place • Describe the key stakeholders in the issue • Talk about possible impacts beyond those discussed in the resource (25-30 pts) • Describe how the issue impacts your life • Discuss how the issue impacts those around you • Discuss how the issue impacts other issues you might be concerned about (7-10 pts) • Describe or discuss how the issue relates to course readings • Discuss the capitals which might be impacted by the issue and why this is important (7-10 pts) • Cite and reference the resource(s) used (see ANGEL site for more on citations and referencing) • Describe the type of resource (newspaper, magazine, etc.), the resource’s distribution (daily, monthly, web, etc.), the audience you think it is for (academic, general public, professionals, etc.), and other relevant information. • Evaluate the article and its effectiveness in identifying and discussing the issues, i.e., are facets of the issue missing from the resource?
