Emerging Scholars Program (ESP), Fall 2008Calculus Workshop - M408DGeneral InformationDiscussion Section: M210E, Unique # 58680 , TTh 2-5 PAI 4.28Assistant Instructor: Grant LakelandE-mail: [email protected]: RLM 13.150, 512-232-6190Office hours: M 3-4, W 1-2, F 9-10, or by appointmentWebsite: http://www.ma.utexas.edu/users/glakeland/Student Assistants: Raul Sanchez, [email protected] Martinez, [email protected]: MWF 8:00 - 9:00, ETC 2.108Professor: Dr. OdellDescriptionThe main purpose of this workshop is to help you to excel in, and obtain a broader compre-hension of, both the current M408D class and mathematics beyond. This will be done byworking on challenging problems and discussing them with others. Greater understandingis obtained by explaining and justifying ideas to your peers. Over the semester we will allwork together on daily worksheets. These will not generally be collected, although studentsmay on occasion be asked to write up solutions, or present them to the class.HomeworkThis workshop will not assign regular homework, and you are not required to complete theworksheets outside of class. We will not normally discuss the homework you will be assignedin Professor Odell’s lecture. If you have questions about those problems, feel free to ask inmy office hours or Professor Odell’s, or in the ESP study room.AttendanceSince the main idea of this workshop is teamwork, for which the team needs to be present, attendance is mandatory. If an unavoidable conflict means you will not be able to make asession, if possible let me know in advance. You must not miss more than three discussionsections during the semester. The goal of the workshop is to create a friendly, relaxed studyatmosphere, which can only happen if everyone attends and gets to know the rest of theclass. Also, regular lateness will count towards permitted absences, so please be on time.1WriteupsIn the event that you miss a session, in order that you keep up with class, you must writeup and turn in one problem from the worksheet of the class you missed. The worksheet willbe available on the class website. This is due within one week of the class you missed.ReviewsThere will be three midterm exams in Professor Odell’s class. Before each, a group ofstudents will write up and present a review of the material on the exam for the class. Everystudent is required to be a part of at least one review team.Additional RemarksThe worksheets will be as self-contained as possible. If you do not want to bring your (big, heavy) calculus textbook to discussion, I will have a copy for reference. Calculators willseldom be needed, but they may be useful on occasion. I’ll let you know which problemsyou can use them
