Purdue University College of Education Educational Leadership and Cultural Foundations EDST 612C Seminar Doctoral Thesis Preparation 1 credit TBA Fall Semester 2007 Dr Marilyn A Hirth Phone 765 494 0319 desk 494 7299 EDFA Office 447 5893 home e mail mahirth purdue edu Mailing address Beering Hall of Liberal Arts and Education Department of Educational Studies Purdue University 100 North University Street West Lafayette IN 47907 2098 Office 5138 BRNG Course Description This course is an experimental one credit seminar course that assists doctoral students with preparing and writing their preliminary examinations and or developing their dissertation research proposals Course Objectives A scientist practitioner model of professional preparation is practiced in the Department of Educational Studies within the School of Education see the Model for Professional Preparation at http www soe purdue edu Teacher Education 2002 This course will address the key components of the model by requiring students to Think critically and reflectively Synthesize create and communicate knowledge Engage in professional development Participate actively in the profession Upon completion of this course students will 1 Have a Timeline for Completion signed and approved by their major professor that delineates the activities they will complete each semester to finish their dissertations 2 Complete the activities outlined on the Timeline for a grade of A B or C for this course EDFA 612C 3 Begin or continue the process of developing their dissertation proposal Text Glatthorn A 1998 Writing the winning dissertation A step by step guide Thousand Oaks CA Corwin Press Reference American Psychological Association 2001 Publication manual 5th edition Washington D C Author Assignments and Grading 1 The Timeline for Completion document is the contract between the student and the professor The column for Spring 2005 and EDFA 612C must be completed by the student submitted to the professor and approved for the grade the student requests Activities toward completion of the preliminary examination and or stages of dissertation research are acceptable items to list in the Timeline The student will negotiate with the professor the activities that will be completed to earn an A B or C Failure to complete the negotiated activities assignments by Monday December 10 2007 will result in a lower grade or an F in the course 2 As appropriate students will participate in Blackboard discussions posted by the professor or initiated by students in the course The purpose of Blackboard is to facilitate student support and provide a means for sharing research ideas and concerns with the group rather than only with the professor As a result common research themes may emerge and students may find an opportunity for collaboration and teaming on a particular research topic
