(Tentative) Syllabus for Chemistry 237C: Organic ChemistryDr. Jasmine BryantOffice: BAG 202DEmail: [email protected] Description: Welcome to organic chemistry! This course will serve as an introduction into an exciting area of science. Initially we will focus on how molecular structure is interpreted, and how it impacts the properties and reactivities of different molecules. These concepts will be applied toward learning fundamental reactions for a variety of functional groups.Text and Supplies: We will use Carey, Organic Chemistry, 9th edition. You will need a Connect account for online homework. A molecular model kit is required(I recommend one by HGS).Class Times: MWF 12:30 – 1:20pm ARC 147In-person Office Hours: Wednesday 1:30pm – 3:00pm (CHB 339); Additional TBDAppointments: If requesting an appointment: 1) email Dr. Bryant directly, 2) indicate if you are wanting a closed 1-on-1 session or if it is OK to schedule classmates in the same meeting, 3) list specific days/timesthat will work for your schedule. We should be able to set an appointment in a single email transaction and reply. It is also fine to schedule a video conference (also can be “open” or 1-on-1), to avoid commuting, etc.Grading: Your total grade will comprise:Connect HW: 10%Quizzes: 10%Exam 1: 20%Exam 2: 20%Final Exam: 40%The mean grade for this course is set by the department at 2.6 ± 0.2 and cannot be changed (it’s not under my control).Connect HW: The online system, Connect, will have homework assignments for each chapter. There will be up to three LearnSmart modules each week (about 20 minutes each) as well as an assignment of end-of-chapter problems due Sundays at 9pm (There will approximately seven of these assignments total). Your total score for all Connect assignments will make up 10% of your overall grade. The actual raw points for different Connect assignments may vary. A Connect subscription can be purchased by visiting http://connect.mcgraw-hill.com/class/j_bryant_section_c.Quiz Sections: Quiz sections will be on Tuesdays and led by your TA. Quiz sections will involve some format of graded work, with slight variation according to the lecture topics. Come prepared with questions from any of the course materials. There will be up to 7 quizzes, with one dropped score, and yourcombined quiz grades will count for 10% of your final grade. No regrades are allowed on quizzes. No makeup quizzes will be allowed. A missed quiz results in a score of zero for that quiz – and that will count as your “dropped quiz” for the quarter.Exams: There will be 2 mid-quarter exams and one final exam. More specifics regarding exam content will be discussed in lectures. No makeup exams will be given. If a midterm exam is missed for an excusable reason, that exam score will not be included in your overall grade. The reason for a missed midterm exam must be approved by Dr. Paul Miller (BAG 303D) and Dr. Bryant. If you miss the final exam for an excusable reason, the Departmental policy applies: you will receive an incomplete and must take the final exam for 237 in another quarter. For all exams, you may use black, blue, or purple ink - no other colors are allowed. Answers in pencil will also be accepted. Exams will be photocopied before return. No electronic devices or calculators may be used at any time, for any reason, during an exam. Molecular model kits are allowed, but may not be exchanged/shared during the exam. You may also have a single 3 x 5” note card to use during the exams (front and back may be covered in hand-written notes). No sharing of note cards during exams. Any materials used during an exam are subject to collection and inspection by a TA or the instructor. Anything that is not the result of your individual effort during an exam period will be considered cheating and will result in a grade of zero for that exam. If you make adjustments to your exam after time has expired, you may lose a significant portion of your exam points according to Dr. Bryant’s discretion (up to a zero score for the entire exam). If you would like to request academic accommodations due to a disability, please contact Disability Resources for Students, MGH 011, 206-543-8924 (V) or 206-543-8925 (TTY). If you have a letter from Disability Resources for Studentsindicating that you require academic accommodations, please be sure to discuss these with Dr. Bryant and fill out a Testing Contract, if necessary.Regrade Policy: Regrades must be requested within 3 days of return of the exam or posting of the answer key (whichever occurs later). No regrades will be considered if the point change is < 5 points. Exams will be photocopied before they are returned. Any changes to your exam may forfeit a regrade. Requesting a regrade on any portion of the exam allows the entire exam to be regraded (i.e., scores on some problems may actually go down). Scores will only be adjusted if a mistake in the grading is found. To submit a regrade, attach a completed regrade request form (found online) to your exam and bring themto me.Classroom Etiquette: Please be seated quietly by the time class starts. If you come in late, find a seat near the end of a row and do not disturb the class. Similarly, if you must leave early, sit at the end of a row. Silence all cell phones and tablets / laptops. During exams, phones must be turned off (even vibrate-mode is loud when the room is quiet). Food and drink are fine, just don’t disturb others or leave a mess.Discussion Board and Share Space: The discussion board is a place to post questions about the course materials and respond to posts from your classmates. With 600 students, it is unrealistic to expect rapid responses to all email questions. Many email topics will be directed to the discussion board. Some Keys to Success:DO NOT GET BEHINDKeep up with the material and seek help ASAP when something is unclear. Be accountable and proactive.Practice, Practice, PracticeDo the book problems and challenge your study partners with homemade problemsMemorization versus UnderstandingMemorization is a necessary component of learning. It is NOT a substitute for understanding. Memorization alone will fail you when you are challenged with anything not on your “list”. In this class, youwill be expected to apply your knowledge, reasoning, and intuition to problems you have never seen before.Use the Solutions Manual CautiouslyThe solutions manual is a
